I let out a sigh of relief. I have no idea how long it’s going to take for him to know that I screwed him over, but I hope he manages to get his brother back before then.

I scope out my surroundings. I don’t have a weapon yet.

My goddess, what are you doing out here?Kashton’s voice fills my head and I’m immediately relieved to feel him, hear him.

I’m trying to figure out how I can help.

Go inside and stay safe. That’s how.

Kash.

Athena, I mean it. Bullets are flying.

A dragon drops down in front of me. He lands so hard, his feet crack the cement. I gasp and stumble backwards a moment.

Kashton shifts into his human form so quickly I have to blink a few times. “Athena, I can’t worry about you. I need you to go inside and wait for this to be over.”

“No.”

He glares at me, but then nods. “Fine. I’m going to shift, I want you to climb up on me. Be fast. I’m a big target.”

“Uh, okay.”

He moves back into the open space and shifts. I watch a dragon form unfold in front of me.

That’ll never get old.

Once he’s shifted, I run toward him. He roars and fire bursts from his mouth at a couple of guys firing at him. I gasp but force myself to keep moving. I don’t want him to get hurt because he’s helping me.

Climbing onto a dragon is a lot more difficult than I was anticipating. I grab onto the ridges of his muscles, but his scales are almost too smooth, it’s hard to hold onto him. My hands get scraped and sliced a little from his scales too. I hadn’t realized how sharp they could be.

I barely manage to get up onto his back. He moves before I’m ready. I’m sure I’m going to fall off before I figure out how to hold on. There are small spikes along the ridge of his back. They’re sharp at the top, but I manage to grip the one in front of my crotch like a saddle horn. I squeeze my thighs and hook my feet under another row of spikes. I’m steady enough that when he takes off, I’m able to hold on.

“Oh shit, oh shit.”

I hear him chuckle in my head.

“Shut up, asshole,” I snarl at him as he climbs higher and higher until I can see the whole strip.

It’s then that I see multiple dragons flying, fighting, and engaging with the militia. Everything is on fire, buildings crumbling, iconic structures reduced to nothing but rubble and ash.

“What happened? How did it get to this?”

I’ll explain it all later, I promise. He soars lower, toward the top of the buildings and then lands right on the roof of The Dragon’s Lair.

You need to stay up here. It’s too dangerous without a saddle or something for you to be on my back.

I don’t argue this time and get off his back. I go to the edge and look down.

Something that sounds like a canon booms. One of the tanks is firing at a dragon. It barely manages to close its wings and avoid being hit. It crashes into the side of The Luxor.

“Shit. Who is that?”

Kash doesn’t answer me. He lunges off the roof and goes to their aid. I stand on the roof and watch everything fall apart.

“Athena.”

Jasmine runs up to me.
