Jasmine shakes her head and backs away from the bars. “I’ve already missed my check-in.”

I glance back at Jerrick who is typing furiously on his phone. He glances up at me and then back on his phone.

“He’s probably already dead.”

I turn my focus back on Jasmine. “What have you reported already?”

“Nothing really. I told him everyone I saw. I told him the little bits of conversation I heard, but you guys caught me before the really juicy stuff. You all really found human mates?”

I’m not sure what to say to that. I’m not sure if we can trust her.

I glance back at Jerrick. His expression is nearly murderous. He gives me a curt, little shake of his head to let me know that under no circumstances am I supposed to say anything.

“Ash’s mate is human and she shifted into an obsidian dragon once he claimed her.”

I hear Jerrick shift behind me, but I don’t care. The truth isn’t worth concealing if it’s going to lead to this shit. It’s just not. If the Elders or any of the clan leaders have an issue with what’s happening, then they can fight with fate.

Jasmine lets out a breath. “How is that possible?”

“Grey fucked with fate. He tried to eliminate female dragons. He almost succeeded but now that dragons are finding human mates, then there’s hope again.”

“It’s against the law.”

“Why?” I ask her.

She blinks at me like she’s never considered the question. She opens and closes her mouth.

“Obsidian dragons became extinct around the same time the laws were changed. The younger generations just know the law is what it is,” she says.

I nod slowly. “Things need to change. The Elders have made it clear they’re not willing to budge from the ancient ways and we’re going to lose the war in more ways than one if things don’t change. Grey is manipulating too many things. He’s forcing our hands.”

The prison cell door opens and Jonathan enters with Darius and Khalid behind him. I glance over at Jerrick with a cocked eyebrow. “He has access to security areas,” Jerricks says.

I nod again.

Darius steps up next to me. Khalid flanks him as always. “Do you know where Marcus is holding your brother?”

Jasmine shakes her head.

“I bet I can guess.” Darius sighs. “I will secure your brother. Give me a couple of hours.”

“That’s going to have to wait,” Jerrick says in a dangerously low voice. He holds up his phone. “The wifi just went down and my phone has no service. It could be that we’re too far down, but I’m guessing they’ve knocked out all communication.”

“Well, fuck,” I growl.

“Who turned off the wifi and communications?” Jasmine asks with a note of suspicion in her voice.

“There’s an unofficial-looking military outside demanding that all supernatural creatures be brought to them,” Jerrick says.

Her eyes widen. “Seriously? What are we doing?”

“For the time being, we’re staying put. I’ve got security at every entrance and on the roof. I’ve got a back up system they won’t be able to tamper with no matter how hard they try.” Jerrick glances at Jonathan. “As soon as we activate the backup system, I’ll make sure we’re all put back into communication.”

“You can’t leave me in here,” Jasmine says, her voice getting a little shrill.

Jerrick gives her an unsympathetic look.

“Jerrick, please. If something goes wrong, are you going to be able to get me out of here in time?” she says.
