Jonathan shakes his head. “I’m afraid not. I’m concerned that he may not be human. He disappeared into the stairwell and I can’t find him anywhere after that. As far as I can tell he didn’t leave the building, but he hasn’t been on any other floor.”
“Definitely does not sound human. I know there are some that are good like that, but I can’t imagine they’d be in Vegas looking for my Athena.”
Jonathan nods. “I wanted you to be aware. I’m working on security and extra surveillance but if this is a shifter, fae, or vampire, then it may be harder to track him down in one way or another.”
“Do the best that you can. If you figure out anything about him, let me know. In the meantime, I’ll see about getting more information about her ex-boyfriend. I’m afraid it’s him. He got into her condo without triggering one of her alarms. She’s incredibly well secured. It would take a techno fae to…”
Jonathan and I both look at each other.
“Fuck. Do you think it’s possible she was dating a fae?”
“It certainly is a possibility.”
I rub my hand over my face. “Grey has been working with other supernaturals. This is a fucking nightmare. How am I supposed to keep her safe?”
Jonathan puts his hand on my arm. “We will keep her safe, Kashton. There is an army of dragons in this building.”
“That’s all the human headlines need.” I lift my hand and drag it across the space in front of me, like the headline is forming right there before us. “Dragon horde destroys the Vegas Strip.”
“The humans will have to come around at some point. They’ve needed us before. It might be time for them to need us again.”
I don’t know how old he is, but I know he’s been around for a very long time.
“Any chance you know anything about the Obsidian Queen?” I ask, curious more than anything.
“If I knew anything, I would’ve said something. I wasn’t around that long ago, but I’ve been around long enough to know that the Elders have never had qualms about lying to get what they want. If they hadn’t lied, my mate wouldn’t be dead.”
I cover Jonathan’s hand with my own. “Then maybe it’s time for the Elders to be held with their own conclave.”
Jonathan shakes his head. “Like anything else in this world, those who hold the power and wealth, make the rules, control history, and make sure that no one steps out of line. If we stage an uprising, they’ll come for all of us.”
I meet his brick red eyes, glowing with his dragon’s gaze too. “Then let them come.”

KASHTON
Ireturn to my room after Jonathan and I discuss a couple of tactics to try. I knock on the adjoining door. I know I shouldn’t bother her, but I need to see that she’s okay, even though I left her like fifteen minutes ago. Plus, she needs to know the truth of what’s going on.
The door opens. She’s changed out of her pajamas, and immediately I wonder if she’s considering running again. “Who was at your door?” she asks.
“Jonathan. He brought some surveillance footage of our floor to show me. I need to know more about your ex-boyfriend.”
Her nose wrinkles in disgust. “Why?”
“I need to be sure it wasn’t him.” I move into her space until she steps aside and lets me into her room. I glance around the space. The bed is perfectly made, aside from the foot of the bed where she obviously sat down at some point. Then I catch sight of not just one camera, but three.
She sighs and follows me into her room.
“I see you’re still into your old tricks.”
She sits down on the chair at the desk and folds her legs under her, and crosses her arms over her chest. “I like to make sure that my room is safe at all times.”
“Someone got in this afternoon, Athena. Did any of your sensors pick up on it?”
Her eyes widen and she lurches up from her seat. “What? What are you talking about?” She grabs for her phone in her pocket. She puts her code in on the lock screen, but it takes her four times before she finally manages to unlock it. Her fingers dance over the screen, and then she’s staring at the screen with a furrowed brow, thin lips, and her foot is tapping rapidly on the ground.
She gasps and throws the phone like it burned her. “He was in my room. He was here.”
