The pendant, or what was left of it, was lying on the kitchenette counter.

“What happened?” I ran over, picking up the two halves of the heartstone, ignoring the metal, the chain. “When did this happen?”

“I was checking on Nina around two this morning, when I heard a cracking sound and it lit up the whole room like I was standing in a star. By the time I got over to it, it was in two, and one half was smoking, dark, swirling black. I didn’t dare touch it after that.”

Two a.m.? That was when we… when I…

I know, mate. When you claimed me.

Levi stepped up behind me, his hand sliding around my waist as he pressed against me.

Both halves lit up, the blackened piece looking more and more like glass the brighter it glowed.

He picked up that piece and smiled softly. “It looks like obsidian. Syrena, is that possible?”

She shrugged. “I think the more matings you guys make, the more humans get claimed, the more the rules are changing.”

I stared at the stones in disbelief. “I don’t get it. What exactly happened?”

Syrena smiled as she shrugged again. “If I had to guess, you somehow split the heartstone into two, and made one of the pieces into one for your mate to wear. A piece of obsidian, to represent your clan.” She picked up both pieces. “I’ll work on housings for both, and then you should both be able to wear them.”

Before I could say anything else, Levi said, “Make them into rings, Syrena.” Just to me, he added,Like wedding rings. I want to be yours, in all ways.

How could I say no to a request like that?
