Or maybe it didn’t exist at all.
But if it was in this structure, or on this site somewhere, Darius knew he and Khalid had to find it before Michelle or the other humans could get their hands on it.
Just in case.
“Okay, I think we’ve moped long enough. Give me that flashlight. I found the entryway to this structure. I’ll find us the way out of this trap.” Michelle held out her hand expectantly.
With a chuckle, Darius handed it over. “Lead the way.”
He let her start to inspect the walls of the room, running her fingers gently along the surface, no doubt looking for a crevice or a notch that would indicate a hidden panel, some way out.
While she searched, he projected his thoughts out to Khalid.
Michelle found a door. We’ve fallen into a trap—one I can’t get out of in my human form. Get Dr. Brighton or someone to help you find us, get us out. Khal, I think we’re on to something here. Michelle’s talking about obsidian.
Khalid didn’t respond right away, which gave Darius plenty of time to contemplate the woman moving around the room.
She would’ve made a fine dragon, if she’d been born to one of the clans, rather than the humans. Smart, willful, and strong, with the attitude of a warrior princess, the kind who could’ve grown up to lead her clan, with or without a mate. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, and she didn’t shy away from topics just because they might offend.
Michelle would’ve been a perfect dragon mate.
If only she’d been born a dragon.
Maybe he’d read it wrong. Maybe his heartstone hadn’t glowed at all when they touched. He hadn’t seen it, and neither had she. Maybe the adrenaline, the rush of falling, jostled something loose in his head, to make him think this way.
It made more sense than yet another dragon prince falling to a human female.
Stay where you are. We’ll find a way out and get you back to the surface. Whatever you do, keep your dragon under control and hidden away from her. If she is hunting dragon lore, your father will want to know about this.
Darius sighed. Of course, he should reach out to Marcus, let him know that they might’ve stumbled onto something important.
But if he did that, the dig site would undoubtedly end up destroyed or shut down, and Michelle would lose her chances of whatever great discovery she hoped to find.
Disappointing her seemed like a much bigger burden to bear than the disappointment of his father.
Before he could respond to Khalid again, he heard Michelle shout, “Aha!”
