“I won’t. You wouldn’t leave me.”
“Q, I deserve this. After everything I’ve done. I’ve never told you my crimes against humans. Against women.”
“James, we both know that most people have the power to change themselves and redeem themselves. That’s what you’re doing here. Redemption, not being condemned. This isn’t some karmic payback.”
“Q, you have no idea how many times I’ve thought about biting you. Drinking you dry.”
She cringed at a little at his words. They hurt. He was trying to hurt her. Scare her. It wouldn’t work. Grey and Stefano were far scarier to her. When all of this was over, he would be grateful to be alive.
She hoped.
The vial of silver liquid turned out to be an invisibility spell. James said the dosage wouldn’t last long. It was meant to be short lived. But they hadn’t even started up the stairs yet.
“There’s a service elevator toward the back. It’ll take us up and out the back.”
Quinn shifted her stance and turned around, helping him turn around. They slowly made their way toward the elevator. She knew there was a chance that someone would notice the empty elevator, but they had to give it a try. They needed to get out before Grey noticed they were missing, or before the spell wore off.
The elevator was gratefully empty and unguarded. Unlike their room. Quinn and James waited until they knew they were going to be checked on, like they were every fifteen minutes.
Not only did the invisibility spell make you unseen, but it was like you weren’t there at all. They were able to walk through the wall once the guard left. They had fifteen minutes before they would be checked on again.
Fifteen minutes to make their escape.
They stepped onto the elevator and went up. The door opened. There was someone standing right in front of them. Quinn gasped, but the guy didn’t react. She recognized him as one of the guards who had checked on them.
“Just walk forward, Q.”
She did as James said, and they walked right through the guy. Quinn didn’t feel anything at all, but she shivered. She didn’t like not being corporeal.
She caught sight of the back door and headed for it. I had to be for deliveries. She walked through the back door into the alley way.
It was snowing, but she couldn’t feel the cold. “You know what I don’t understand? Why aren’t we just falling through the Earth to the other side of the planet?”
“It’s magic, not science. The magic is meant to protect you. You can walk on the ground, but for a short period of time you won’t exist on the plane with others.”
“Why did you give me all these potions and stuff? You didn’t even tell me what any of them were.”
“I wanted you to be safe. I’d planned to teach you about everything. I didn’t, however, plan to be taken prisoner. I didn’t want you to have to actually protect yourself. But I’m glad you could.”
Quinn didn’t like how distant his voice was starting to sound. He was feeling heavier by the second. She managed to get to the mouth of the alley.
She kept glancing back over her shoulder, afraid the vampires would be on her any moment.
“I’m telling you, I can smell her.”
Sebastian was suddenly in front of her. She stopped.
Nash trotted up as if he was playing catch up. “I can smell her now too. Where the fuck is she?”
They were looking for her. Was it from when she came in the club or was the spell wearing off?
“Sebastian?”
He stiffened. “Did you hear that?”
Nash grunted. “What the fuck is going on here?”
Quinn glanced around. They needed to get out of here. She hoped they would keep following her scent. She readjusted her grip on James and kept moving. She hoped their vehicle was in the same direction. Though, it wouldn’t matter if the vampires found them.
