Warren matched his smile and then turned around. He opened the driver’s side of Henrik’s car.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Henrik barked.
Warren laughed. “I thought maybe you’d be too tired.”
“Fuck off. It’s bad enough I deserted her in the middle of a gated community.”
Warren scoffed, “She was safe. Getting her out was interesting. I think there are going to be a few phone calls about a wolf in that fancy neighborhood and maybe a couple about a streaker.”
“Well there’s a dragon slayer staying with a vampire, so it shouldn’t be a big deal.”
“I hate to ask, dear, but would you mind sitting in back?”
Quinn eyed the giant man. “As comical as it would be to watch you climb into the backseat, you should definitely take the front.”
“You’re very kind.”
They climbed into the car. Quinn perched on the edge of the bench seat and rested her arms on both headrests behind the men.
Henrik glanced at her in the rearview mirror.
“What are we doing now that we’re back?” she asked.
“Arthur and Enzo want us to go to the fae market. There’s something they would like us to see,” Warren said.
Henrik grumbled. He would trust the fae, but he wasn’t keen on a detour. He just wanted it to all be over. He was tired of the guessing games and always being on alert. Not to mention, he had a mate now. He wanted to spend time with her, especially naked. He was keen on making her his forever. He was a little bummed their connecting for the first time had been rushed. He should’ve kept it in his pants and made it more special for her.
He felt like he was screwing up every moment of having a mate.
“Have we gotten anywhere with more of Stefano’s locations or James?” Quinn asked.
“We’ve narrowed a couple of places down where we think he’s holding more women. No sign of James. Syrena has a tap on your brother and Rebecca though.”
Henrik was going to hate himself if he couldn’t bring her friend home to her. She was fighting so hard for him. He didn’t want her to lose her friend, but she didn’t have as much faith as she did. He was sure James was dead. Stefano wasn’t the type to take prisoners unless they had value. He doubted James had much value, but he hoped Quinn was right.
The city came up around them as Henrik followed Warren’s directions to the fae market. They parked the car and Warren led the way.
“Uh, Warren, we’re headed right for Wrigley Field.” Quinn’s voice was questioning.
“The fae market isn’t on this plane.”
Quinn paused. “Excuse me?”
Henrik took her hand. “I promise, you’re safe with me. Come on.”
Warren stepped through the gate, looking like he just walked through a wall. Quinn gasped and jerked forward.
“Oh my gosh, that was so cool.”
He jerked her to a stop. “You should go wait in the car. There’s no reason for you to go in there too.”
She swatted his arm. “Don’t be a dick.”
He stopped. He needed to get out of his head. Having her with him was an utter destruction. He was trying to curb his inner impulses to carry her back to the cabin and hide her away. He didn’t want to put her in the line of danger. His dragon was roaring at him to get her out of there.
“I’m sorry. I’m fighting…my instincts about putting my mate in danger.”
Her expression softened a little. “I’m also your equal.”
