They flew for a while and Quinn was beyond freezing. Her teeth were chattering, her body shivering uncontrollably.
“I’m going t-to end up with hy-hypo-th-thermia at this rate,” she said out loud.
Henrik growled and then started to descend toward the ground. She tried to get an idea of where they were, but she couldn’t see anything. It was just dark.
The landing was a little rough as he dropped her to the ground. She landed in a snowbank. She huffed and got to her feet, knocking the snow away. Her body was so cold. She glanced around the small clearing. The gibbous moon offered some light, but she could see a structure not too far in the distance.
She heard Henrik’s wings behind her and turned around. Henrik landed behind her and shifted just as his feet hit the ground. The man was stark naked. She shouldn’t have been surprised, as she’d seen his clothes turn to shreds right before her eyes.
Henrik marched toward her like he was on a mission. He lifted her into his arms and kept stalking forward.
“Henrik, what is going on? I need you to talk to me.”
He snorted and kept walking.
Was he even in charge? Was this only the dragon? Quinn really wished she had someone to talk to about whatever was happening. Really, she wanted Henrik to talk to her.
The building turned out to be a small cabin. He flipped open a keypad and punched in a code. The door unlocked.
It was a fancy cabin in the woods.
He opened the door and stepped through the threshold. It was warmer inside, but Quinn still felt too cold. Henrik set her down on the couch and went about making a fire in the fireplace. The room filled with warm firelight as Henrik moved around the room gathering blankets.
“Stand,” he ordered.
She did so, not sure of what else she should do. He helped her out of her coat and shoes. She thought he’d be done, but then he started removing the rest of her clothes, leaving on her bra and underwear. He made a makeshift bed on the floor and pulled her down into the blankets with his naked body. He wrapped a few blankets around them.
At first, she just felt cold, but between the fire now fully roaring and waves of heat coming off him, she slowly started to warm up.
She let out a sigh of relief as the cold ache of her body finally eased. She let out a small sigh of contentment.
“Henrik?”
He didn’t answer, but his arm tightened around her.
“Henrik, I need you to talk to me. What’s going on?”
Mine.
The deep voice wasn’t out loud. She could feel him inside her head. She turned in his arms. It was then that she saw Henrik’s eyes weren’t human at all. They looked like a mix between reptile and feline.
“Was that you?”
You were in danger.
“You were in danger. Rebecca was a dragon slayer.”
They would’ve used you to get to me.
“Are you Henrik’s dragon?”
I’m your dragon.
She smiled at that. It was such an honest answer.
“Where are we?”
Somewhere safe.
