“I’m not going to hurt them. I’m going to give them unbelievable power.”

Quinn crossed her arms over her chest and cocked her hip. “Then give them freedom to do whatever the hell they want?”

Grey scoffed, “No, they wouldn’t know what to do with this kind of power.”

She rolled her eyes. “Why don’t you give them the choice?”

“Quinn, you’re here to witness it. Then I’m going to gift you as well and I’m going to send you back to your mate to kill him.”

She froze. “You can’t do that. You’re winning. You don’t have to do that.”

Grey’s smile grew malicious. “Love, one of my main goals is to wipe the world clean of dragons. To destroy every last one of them. I do have to do just that.”

“Then don’t use me to do it.”

“It will be sweet poetry, love.”

“Stop fucking calling me that, asshole.”

Grey didn’t even bristle. He moved back to Tabitha. “How are we doing?”

“Just about ready,” she replied.

“Why are you doing this?” Quinn asked.

Tabitha glanced over at her. “Me?”

“You belong to the Opal Clan, right?”

Tabitha kept her focus on the spell and her list of ingredients. “I did. You see, the king sold me off. He didn’t like that I was looking into why there were so few dragon females. Then when I found the stash of ancient books and scrolls, he cast me out by selling me. To Grey. Grey promised me he would free me and allow me to leave once I helped him get his revenge. Turns out, I wanted revenge too.”

“Why didn’t you get help? From another clan?”

“Another clan?” she scoffed. “They’re self-serving and don’t give a shit about anyone who isn’t in their clan. There was no one to help me.”

“Syrena cares about you. She wanted to help you.”

Tabitha faltered. “Syrena?”

Quinn nodded eagerly. “She wants to save you. She didn’t know why you were doing this, but she knew that it wouldn’t be something you’d do without a reason.”

Grey glanced between the women. “Enough chit-chat. Tabitha, finish the spell.”

The witch got back to work.

Quinn paced while she glanced at her brother and back at Grey. “Are you going to let my brother go after all this?”

“He makes a wonderful assistant. He’s allowed to live his life until I need him.”

Quinn glowered at him. “Do you think we’re all just here to serve at the pleasure of Grey?”

“Oh, if only, Quinn, if only. I wouldn’t have to do all this work if that were the case.” Grey lifted a small vial and poured the contents into a glass with red liquid. “Now, tell me. Do you have Henrik’s heartstone?”

Her brow furrowed. “Uh, no. Syrena sent the heartstones into the aether. They don’t know where they are.”

“That’s good news.” He handed her the glass.

While she held it, he checked her wrists, pulled at the collar of her shirt and looked down at her cleavage and around her neck.
