Drake nodded earnestly. “Sure. Then we can save him together.”
“What is the next phase?” Henrik asked, hoping Drake would keep talking.
“I’m not privy to that information. I’ve just been helping him gather what he needs.”
“And what’s that?”
“There are some ingredients he’s had trouble getting his hands on. I’ve been able to help him cut through the red tape.”
Henrik wanted to throttle Drake for spewing riddles instead of saying something helpful. “You had to have heard something. What is he doing?”
Drake glanced at Henrik and then back to Quinn. “Come with me, Quinn. Let’s for once be on the same side.”
Henrik finally homed in on Drake’s guest in the house.
Someone was watching them from the depths of the dark in the far room through the kitchen.
“Who’s here?” Henrik asked quietly.
Drake’s head snapped right toward the kitchen, Henrik’s theory proven correct.
“No one,” Drake said, turning back to him.
“Come out, come out, come out whoever you are,” Henrik called.
Quinn stepped into the room and looked down through the dining room into the dark kitchen.
The darkness shifted and a figure stepped out into the light. It was a woman. She was human, he could smell it on her, but she smelled like fire and brimstone. The scent was too familiar, but he couldn’t place it.
The woman was tall and curvy with a defiant lift to her chin. She had warm umber skin. She was striking, not just in her looks but the way she held herself. She was confident. Her eyes twinkled a knowing look.
“Who are you?” Quinn asked.
“Drake’s girlfriend?” she said with a playful tone. “Isn’t that the game we’re playing tonight?”
“What’s your name?” Henrik asked.
“Rebecca. And you are?”
Rebecca. The name sounded familiar. He lifted his gaze to the blank wall trying to figure out exactly how he knew that name. Why couldn’t he….?
“Oh, fuck.”
Rebecca’s lips curved. “The dragon finally figured out who I am.”
Henrik reached for Quinn and yanked her to him. “Remember when you said you would listen to me?”
Rebecca chuckled. “This is going to be so much fun. You’re one of the Wystan clan, aren’t you? Is this your mate?”
“I don’t have a mate,” he growled immediately. He wasn’t going to let Rebecca go after Quinn.
“Your brother does though. I’m excited to take down every single one of you. I’m so glad I have a face to go with a name. I’ve been hunting you for some time now. After everything you and your clan have done…”
“You work for a vampire? I thought dragon slayers came with more integrity than that.”
Quinn gasped.
“The vampire gave me a tip off when a dragon attacked his business dealings. What the vampire does after that, I really don’t give a shit. I’m ridding the world of dragon scum, if Buffy the Vampire Slayer wants to go after Stefano, more power to her.”
