“Quinn, don’t do this. You’re not yourself.”
“It’s time for you to die, dragon,” she spat at him.
Dragon Fire didn’t do this. What could’ve possibly gotten into her?
Quinn ducked and rolled into a maneuver to get away from Henrik. She turned around and her eyes turned bright orange, almost red like the sun. She opened her mouth and fire burst from it.
Henrik didn’t move away. It was fire. He couldn’t be harmed by something so generic. He was a dragon. Why would she try to burn him?
Then the flames licked at his hand and he yanked it back when it sizzled over his skin.
“Oh, fuck.”
She inhaled to shoot another burst at him, but this time he was ready to dodge it.
What the hell kind of fire could burn a dragon?
There was a crowd moving around them, trying to look for an opening to grab Quinn.
“Careful, she’s not herself. She’s super powered. Levi, her fire burned me,” Henrik said, keeping his attention fully on the woman in front of him.
“What? How is that possible?”
“Fuck all,” Syrena burst out. “It’s the Dragon Breath. Grey. He must’ve used the Dragon Breath to infect her.”
“The fire can hurt us?” Levi asked.
“It would appear so. I don’t know. This spell is ancient with little information. I don’t know where Grey got all his…” she trailed off.
Quinn lunged. Henrik was too distracted and wasn’t ready for it. She tackled him the ground and wound her hands around his neck. She inhaled a breath and her eyes lit up again.
Nash and Levi tackled her to the ground, but she easily escaped them.
Henrik scrambled to his feet. “Don’t hurt her.”
Quinn let out a burst of flames and Levi cried out and Nash fell back. She got up heading right for him. Henrik kept backing up. She was here to kill him and no one else. Or maybe he was just first. How did he protect her? How did he keep her safe? How did he stop this from being the worst day of his life?
Quinn blew fire across the lawn, at the house. Now there was fire everywhere, trapping him between her and the garage. He could shift and escape, but then what would they do to her?
“What about sleep powder?” Henrik called.
“If we can get close enough.”
Quinn twisted and lunged toward Levi. She stamped him to the ground and knocked her head against his hard enough to make him see stars. Henrik was still trapped by the fire, unable to do much more than watch in horror as his mate raged.
She was going to kill his brother. Henrik squeezed his eyes shut. There was nothing left to do. There was no other choice.
Henrik leapt into the air, his dragon bursting from him. He heard Syrena’s yelp of concern, but he couldn’t focus on her right now. He had to save his brother. He had to end this before it got too out of control.
Just as he thought he was going to be able to swoop down and grab her, she whipped her head around and smiled just as her eyes turned red and she opened her mouth like a banshee, only instead of a wail, fire was coming straight at him.
Henrik dove, trying to get out of the way. The fire hit him, glancing off his scales rather than engulfing him like she’d tried to do. He landed hard, shifting back to his human form so he didn’t crash into the house.
At least Levi managed to get away.
“The sleeping powder had no effect.” Sebastian said as he helped Henrik to his feet.
Syrena gasped when he turned toward her. He followed her gaze down to his arm. It was red and blistering.
