She wanted to see.

Ash growled. “No.”

“You can’t keep me here.”

His growl intensified. “Finley…I’m a hairsbreadth away from chaining you to a wall.”

She ignored the sexy thoughts of him taking full advantage of her body while chained up and went right back to the anger. “Is this a sexist thing?”

“I’m afraid not,” Henrik said. “It’s a dragon versus human thing.”

Finley rolled her eyes. “I’m going.”

Ash threw his hands in the air. “Fine.”

She blinked rapidly shocked by how quickly he gave in. Henrik’s expression shifted into concern. She didn’t care. Whatever he thought, he could keep it to himself.

Five minutes later, she was in the backseat of a car that reminded her of something out ofThe Fast and the Furious. It was a muscle car, black, with cherry interior. The engine was loud.

Henrik drove like he belonged inThe Fast and the Furioustoo. He weaved in and out of traffic with expertise precision. There was no “oh shit” handle to hold onto, so she gripped the back of Ash’s seat and tried to enjoy the ride.

Fifteen minutes later Henrik parked on a quiet street. She climbed out of the backseat and followed them as they walked up the street. She kept her questions quiet. Now was not the time to pester them. She just followed and kept her eyes open.

Ash stopped and turned around. “You’re not going near that place until I know what’s going on in there.” He kept his voice low but authoritative.

Finley rolled his eyes. “You don’t have to treat me like some fragile person. I can handle myself.”

Ash growled. “I don’t care. You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.”

Finley let out a frustrated burst of air. “You’re a condescending asshole, you know that?”

“Perhaps, but it’s also the truth.”

She crossed her arms over her chest and gestured at him. “Then tell me what we’re walking into. You concealing secrets isn’t going to help anything. So tell me.”

Ash glared at her. “You haven’t had enough today?”

“No,” she said simply.

Ash tossed his hands in the air. “Fine. You want to know the truth? The whole truth? Dragon Fire is a mystical drug. We don’t know for sure what the witch, who is making it, is putting into it or how it works, we just know that it’s killing people. The witch works with Prince…er…King Tristian. He is on a mission with the remaining of his Opal Clan. He’s also a dragon shifter. He and his clan attacked my clan a few months ago, killed my parents, and my siblings and I barely made it out alive. Since then I’ve been working on trying to take him down. But I can’t figure out what he’s doing. Dragon Fire hit the market around the same time I ended up homeless and clanless. Dragon Fire is an important part of whatever it he’s doing. My sister’s guard, Thane, was dosed with the drug and he’s probably going to die if I can’t figure out what the witch did to make it. I need to find a cure and I need to destroy any of the Dragon Fire out there so it doesn’t hurt anyone else.”

Finley blinked at him. “You’re serious?”

“I am.”

“Dragon shifter. Like you?”

Henrik stepped forward. “Like us.”

Finley’s cheeks were redder now, her heart raced, and she looked stunned. “You’re a dragon shifter?” Even though she’d listened to everything Ash had said in his house, and it was obvious he believed it, that he hadn’t been lying to her, it somehow hadn’t felt real.

Until now.

He nodded once.

“You can turn into a dragon.”

“Yes.”
