“Opal? Like Club Opal?”

He nodded again.

“Hang on…”

“I was there that night because we got a tip that there was going to be another attack that night.”

“And you wanted to stop it?”

“People are dying because of dragons. That’s not…I don’t want anyone getting hurt.” The memory of that night filled his mind and he squeezed his eyes trying to get rid of it.

“The drug had to have been given by the bartenders, but by the time I found all the doses, it was too late. Their drinks were gone.”

“Oh. I thought maybe you saved two of them since there were only seven deaths instead of nine.” She looked down at her plate.

“There were nine drugged that night,” he muttered. “You and your sister had the other two doses.”

Plots and Potions

Finley’s head snapped up. “What?”

“I could smell it in your drinks, the ones that were almost completely empty by the time we sat down with you at your table,” he said.

“Then how come we didn’t burn up?”

Ash shook his head. “I don’t know. My brother has been begging me to take you in to see Syrena.”

“Who is that?”

“She the Tourmaline Clan witch.”

“Witch?”

Finley set her fork down and pushed the plate away. There was no way she could eat at that particular moment. She should be dead. Why wasn’t she dead?

“Once a generation two mated dragon shifters will give birth to a witch. She’s magical but she cannot shift.”

“She? They’re all girls?”

Ash nodded. “Syrena wants to do some tests on you to see if we can figure out why you’re immune.”

“Why didn’t you ask me?”

He leaned back in his chair. “That’s not obvious?”

“No.”

“I stayed away from you to keep you safe.”

“Then why did you come back? You said your brother sent you back to me, but I don’t think that’s the case.”

“Henrik has been barking at me to go back to you for two months, but you’re right, that’s not why I came to see you.”

“Are you going to fill me in?”

Ash took a bite of his lunch. “No.”
