“He was using me. Trying to get his fucking ex back. How could I not see through him? How could I think I loved someone who clearly has no heart?”
Finley hated her sister’s grief. She knew she couldn’t protect her from everything, but she wished she could. “We’ll just make sure to tell everyone on social media not to go see his new movie next month and hopefully it’ll bomb in the theaters.”
Olivia chuckled. “Thank you for being my sister.”
“Thank you for being mine. I’m sorry I didn’t know you were missing. I’m sick over thinking what Grey could’ve done to you.”
“It’s my fault. I go days without talking to you all the time. I’ll check in more.”
“At least until you have your own dragon mate.”
“Yeah, what is that about?”
“I don’t know,” Finley chuckled. “But I bet it will make you and your life even crazier.”
Olivia sighed. “He better be as hot as yours. Good lord.”
Finley felt a sting of sadness. “I don’t know if he’s mine.”
“He’ll figure it out.”
“Figure what out?”
Olivia smiled. “That he loves you too.”

A Mate at Last
Ash had never been more scared then when Finley wasn’t herself, then when she didn’t wear his heartstone. He knew it was only symbolic, but maybe it wasn’t. It had kept her safe from Grey until she took it off.
He didn’t want to leave her behind. It felt wrong. Finley was smart and capable. Even in the middle of all her confusion and fear she’d figured out her life. She put together the pieces to get the answers she needed.
It made sense that he’d found her or that she’d found him. It didn’t matter, he just knew that it was on him if he was going to keep her. He didn’t like she was mad at him, but he didn’t know how to fix it either.
He was a prince who had inherited the throne and he’d stay king if he found his mate. What did it matter if she was a dragon or not? Pru wasn’t a dragon mate and she was one of the most respectable females he’d ever met. She gave herself over to saving lives: dragon, human, vampire, and witch alike. She’d save a fae if given the opportunity. The dragon community should’ve embraced her, been proud to call her part of their clan, of any clan.
He got up and went to his balcony. The truth was that Finley scared him because she was standing where he wanted to stand. He liked humans. He certainly didn’t think they were less than dragons.
Especially not if his mate was one.
She was strong, defiant, intelligent, and more beautiful than anyone he’d ever seen. Finley Sawyer had thrown a wrench in his plans because he hadn’t expected to find a mate, let alone want one. There were far more deserving dragons, but he wasn’t big enough to let her go.
As much as it terrified him, he wanted her fighting by her side. If she was going to be his mate and his queen, it would be her duty and honor to protect the clan with him. That was what the kings and queens did for the clan.
Ash grabbed his heartstone off the bed and slid it on his wrist for safekeeping. He needed a plan and he needed help.

By the timeAsh was finishing arranging everything, he waited for Finley bouncing from foot to foot at the bottom of the stairs.
He’d sent her a text requesting her presence and then a couple of hours later sent Pru and Syrena to her with a dress and shoes. It had taken some convincing, but Finley finally agreed to meet him.
Eventually, the sound of the females laughing filtered down from upstairs and Ash couldn’t help the burst of relief that filled him. Maybe she would still want him when all of this was said and done.
Pru and Syrena took Olivia out for the evening trying to get her mind off everything she’d been through and leaving the house empty for them. Olivia stopped next to him before she headed out with the other women.
“If you hurt her, Ash, I will have to murder you.”
