Ash fought the urge to grab her and shake her. What the hell was she saying? “Finley, I don’t want another mate. I want you.”

“Now you decide this? You’re unbelievable. I don’t want you, Asher. I want nothing to do with you. Because of you my sister is in a coma. Because of you I’m in danger. I can’t even go home. I don’t feel safe with you.”

Every word made him ache with fear. She didn’t want him? What the hell was he supposed to do?

His dragon all but roared inside of him. He didn’t want to believe any of it either.

“Finley, please. Let’s talk about this?”

“What is there to talk about?”

Everything in her body language was harsh. Her arms were wrapped around herself like a shield. She was glaring at him harshly, her lips drawn tight in a sour expression. He barely recognized her.

“Don’t do this.”

“I think this is long overdue. You didn’t even want me. Just go, Asher. You’re not wanted here. You can’t protect me. I will protect myself and Olivia.”

Maybe she needed time to cool off. He knew they’d had a small fight last night, but then with the sex he thought they were still trying to move forward it. Had it just been some sick form of breakup sex to her? Not that they had even truly gotten together.

Mates didn’t breakup. They fought. He needed to fight for her.

“I’m not going. Not until you talk to me.”

Finley rolled her eyes. “You’re pathetic. Go back to your little mission of trying to get revenge and leave me alone.”

Ash opened his mouth to respond and then snapped it shut. He stood up. “That’s what you want?”

“What I want is to go back in time before we ever met and make sure that we never meet. You’ve ruined everything, Asher. I want nothing from you. You’ve done enough damage.”

“As you wish.” He headed for the stairs. Every step he took, the ache in the pit of his stomach grew.

His dragon was raging inside of him. How dare he accept their mate’s rejection?!

Ash squeezed his eyes shut trying to gain a semblance of control over what he was feeling, over his dragon’s temper tantrum, over the loss of his mate.

“Ash?”

Gavin’s voice was distant and garbled, almost like he was underwater.

Ash retreated further into himself needing to let go of the anguish he was feeling.

“Ash,” Gavin growled. “Damn it.”

Ash growled low in chest, deep resounding threat to stay away.

Gavin let out his own growl. “You will not shift in here, Ash.”

There was commotion all around him as he struggled to stay in control.

Gavin grabbed him and shook him roughly. “Snap out of it.”

“She’s mine,” Ash snarled.

“Dragon, no one is disputing your claim on your mate.”

“She is,” he growled.

Gavin cursed repeatedly while holding him steady. “You cannot shift. I will put you out if I have to.”
