There were cells along the wall that looked like an old fashion jail cell. On the other side there were cots, one that Olivia was resting on. There was a science lab looking area and a desk with some books and an old computer on it. Pru pulled out a small table and put the food on it and then pulled up the chair that was in front of the desk for her to sit on.
“It’s nothing fancy but I imagine you’ll feel better with your sister in sight.”
Finley nodded. “Yeah. Thank you.” She set her stuff down in the corner. “Look, I know Gavin is going to call Ash, but I think it’s best that he doesn’t see me for right now.”
“I’ll see what I can do, but if I’ve learned anything, no one keeps a dragon from his mate.” Pru gave her a quick hug. “I hope that we can become friends.”
Finley smiled warmly. “Thank you. I would like that too.”
Pru excused herself and headed back upstairs.
It was still a few hours before the sun rose. Finley ate her dinner and then took one of the cots next to her sister. She needed to rest. Her mind was whirling with all sorts of things. Learning more about the dragon mates, she wondered what it would mean for her. Would Ash eventually come around? Would she never find love if she didn’t end up with Ash? Fate meant something, right? If she was fated to be with him and wasn’t…would he always be in the back of her mind?
The ache deep in her chest made it abundantly clear that there was something between them. She missed him. She ached for their connection. Even when she was furious with him, she didn’t want to be away from him. She just wanted to fight with him.
Would he fight with her? Would he fight for her?
The longer she sat there, the more she was sure she was going to fight for him. She just didn’t know how.

A Dragon Possessed
The moment consciousness seeped into his body he could sense something was wrong. Ash reached to the bed next to him, finding it empty. He came out of his sleeping stupor like a rocket and scanned the room for her. Shifting on the bed, his weight pressed into her cold spot on the bed, and that’s when he felt the familiar cool stone against his hand.
His cuff sat on the bed.
She’d taken off his heartstone.
“Fuck.” He grabbed the cuff and rolled off the bed. He put it on his wrist, since he couldn’t shove it right back on her wrist. He’d never told her she always had the ability to take it off. She must’ve really not wanted to wear it anymore if she figured out how to take it off. He’d liked that she’d never wanted to take it off, even though she thought it was something he was doing to her.
Of course, he was the idiot who didn’t claim her in the first place. But he didn’t want to force it on her and they were certainly at odds with each other often enough.
“Fuck,” he muttered again pulling on his clothes.
He knew she was at Sea Glass with her sister. There was nowhere else for her to go. She wouldn’t be safe at home and he knew above all she wasn’t an idiot. And she’d want to be with Olivia.
He pulled his phone out of his jeans and called his brother.
“You realize the sun is barely up, right?” Henrik’s sleepy voice was gruff and annoyed.
“She took her heartstone off.”
“What did you do now?”
Ash sighed. “Is it important? I just need her to be safe. I’m sure she’s at Sea Glass with Olivia.”
“That would make sense. What are you calling me for?”
Ash sat down at the end of his bed. “Honestly, I’m not even sure.”
“You should go after her. Stop acting like you have to choose between your vendetta of honor bullshit and your mate. Mates aren’t presented when it’s convenient. Being fated doesn’t mean you don’t have to work for it.”
“Shut up. You don’t know anything about this,” Ash grumbled.
Henrik chuckled. “It would appear I do. I find it unsettling too.”
“All right, oh wise-one, what do I do now?”
