Ash angled his body and moved forward. Finley moved with him easily, keeping close. She wasn’t going to get left behind.

Kristoff spoke again. “If Wade isn’t coming, what are we doing?”

“We’re waiting for another contact.”

Finley’s hand squeezed Ash’s forearm, trying to get his attention. As soon as he looked back at her, she pointed at the light streaming in behind them. Someone else was here, coming through the same labyrinth of crates they had.

Their position would be compromised. It was just a question of when.

Finley’s heart hadn’t slowed down since she touched him as his cuff lit up. It had nothing to do with fear; just being close to him made her feel things and desire things she’d never really experienced. Stuff she didn’t want to experience.

Finley noticed a cavalier shift in Ash’s attitude. He had a lot riding on whatever was happening in the moment.

He almost seemed like he was on a kamikaze mission. He didn’t care if he lived or died as long as he could save his family. And after what had happened to him, she understand that need so much more. She knew what it was like to be the oldest, to make sure that her sibling was taken care of.

Finley didn’t understand what Kristoff and the woman were talking about. They were leaving out a lot of information which was frustrating, but it wasn’t like they could expect the whole plot to just fall into their laps. Not unless they had a movie villain who would just give them the whole story before they were lowered into the shark tank to be eaten by giant, starving great white sharks. That just wasn’t how the real world worked.

She kept her eyes moving, watching their backs, not wanting anyone to find them. Finley wasn’t sure what they were going to do there, but she was a concerned they would end up having to fight their way out of there.

She felt like an idiot, like she didn’t belong there, but someone had to protect the people from Dragon Fire and whatever else these psychos were planning on doing. This Tristian guy killed Ash’s clan and now he wanted to rule the world?

Who the fuck did this guy think he was?

The light streaming in from behind them died, the door closed once more. It was just a matter of time now.

Ash gestured with his chin where he was headed and led them into a dark corner. They were now surrounded by giant crates in the shadows. They would go unseen.

Or they’d be trapped.

Ash pulled her against his body, holding her against him. It wasn’t a sexual move even though her ass was pressed against his crotch. He held her protectively. The way his leg was forward, he was ready to spin them, and have his back to anyone trying to assault them. He would protect them both as best he could.

She enjoyed the feel of him, but right now she found it almost distracting. She needed to be focused on staying alive. She didn’t need the distraction of wondering what it would be like to have her way with him.

Completely impractical.

Finley watched the shadow move through the maze of boxes. And then another voice entered the conversation.

“You know the two of you are not alone?”

“Wade?” Kristoff said. “What the fuck?”

“What are you doing here?” the woman said.

The man scoffed, “I come empty handed as well. The fucking human Coast Guard really needs the next dose of Dragon Fire.”

“It doesn’t matter,” the woman said. “A new batch, a better batch is being completed as we speak. It will be coming in…”

“Shut it, witch. Did you not hear me? You’re not alone.”

“What does that mean?” Kristoff sputtered.

“I scented Ash and that bitch the moment I came in here. They’re either here now or they were here. Your site is compromised.”

“How can that be?” the woman snapped. “It’s been protected.”

“Really? Cause I got in here no problem. The last time, I got shocked.” Wade’s voice sounded amused more than annoyed.

“Fuck.” Tabitha’s voice was full of irritation, but she sounded much closer.
