“Like a real dragon?”

Ash’s eyes narrowed. “Real as they make them.”

Finley glanced at Henrik who stood there like he was trying to be invisible, but at the same time like he wanted to get away from whatever they were about to walk into. “I’ll stay out of the way. I’m not here to get in the way. I want…I want the truth. I have to see.”

Ash gave her a curt nod and then turned and charged for the big warehouse toward the water. It wasn’t actually on the beach, but it was close enough.

The warehouse was seemingly quiet from the outside until Ash spotted someone on the roof, walking around the perimeter. Ash pointed at the guard to Finley and Henrik so they were aware. She nodded once, wishing she had some sort of weapon, something she could use to help. Once the guard had moved out of sight they darted for the door on the side of the building.

Henrik tapped Ash on the shoulder, gestured down the building and then took off in the opposite direction. Finley realized he was going around.

Ash listened against the door before he opened it. He slipped in, Finley following quickly, not wanting to get caught by the guard on the roof. They were in a dark section of the warehouse. The overhead lights didn’t touch the section. There were boxes and crates everywhere, giving them cover. Ash led her through the labyrinth, making sure to keep her behind him like he could somehow keep her out of danger by blocking it with his body.

Finley kept looking around, trying to see everything at once. She may not have had any training, and she wasn’t a dragon, but she was smart, and she could watch their surroundings, be an extra set of eyes. There was no way she wanted to get caught off guard.

Ash stopped and waited.

Voices filtered through the air.

“No word from Wade yet,” a male voice said.

A female spoke next. “Then he’s probably dead. He was supposed to have that shipment here last night, and he never showed. He wouldn’t dare defy Tristian. No one is that stupid, not even Wade.”

“It was probably that fucking Tourmaline prince.”

“Easy, Kristoff,” the woman said. “There is no need to get angry. Ash and his siblings will not survive this. And the Garnet and Amazonites will suffer similar fates if they choose not to fall in line.”

“If we lost Wade’s shipment, we’re behind schedule,” Kristoff said.

“I’m already creating a new batch. We’ll be more than ready to continue with the plan,” she said.

Finley shifted, drawing Ash’s gaze back at her.

He was clearly on edge, and in the dark light, his eyes seemed to pulse and almost glow.

Finley’s brow furrowed, and her lips pursed. She didn’t like what was going on. It sounded like the dragons were in more danger from each other than from humans, and she didn’t want to watch Ash get hurt.

Even if she was still entirely too confused by him to really know how to feel. He’d practically admitted to being mated to her. She’d felt it in his kiss, in the powerful urge she’d had to find a bed, any soft surface where he could give her what would’ve undoubtedly been the best orgasms of her life, if his kiss was any indication. But love at first sight wasn’t real. Even if a glowing hunk of rock said it was.

And now, they were all in danger, at risk of getting caught, or killed, by whoever was around the crates.

“How do we know it’s going to work?” Kristoff muttered. “The humans are dying.”

“I’ve adjusted the cocktail. and the last test we didn’t lose anyone.”

Ash growled under his breath, just loud enough that Finley could hear, “Tabitha.”

The woman sounded vile and horrid. And if she was the one killing people, poisoning them with this Dragon Fire, Finley wouldn’t feel sorry for her when Ash and Henrik got their hands on her.

“It’ll even work on the wolves and bears.” Her voice was full of a jovial melody.

Great. What else was real? Witches, dragons, wolf shifters, and now bears? What else existed outside of the human understanding? How many other things were real? Would she find out that there were aliens next?

“Good. I have a few things I’d like to do those mongrels,” Kristoff sneered.

“Tristian wants to rule over more than just the humans. He wants the world and I’m going to help him get it,” Tabitha said.

Kristoff was quiet.
