Syrena plopped down on the cot again. Finley took in her sunken eyes, the slacked droop of her shoulders.
“Syrena, are you all right?”
“Uh, yeah, I’m just a little pooped. Casting protection spells and purification spells, I’m…” she yawned, “done for.” And just like that she was breathing deeply and out like a light.
“Wow. I wish I could fall asleep that fast,” Finley muttered.
Olivia reached for her sister’s hand, looking around at everyone. “Fin, what happened? I was on my way to my photo shoot, but I never made it. I felt like a puppet. And I think… Oh, God, I think Zac dumped me. I don’t even know what I did, but I’m sure it’s over.”
“Don’t worry about any of that now. It’s been a long night, and I think we all need a break. You’ll figure it out. You always do.” Finley smiled softly and wrapped her arm around her sister. “But it sounds like Zac’s not your destiny anyway. Unless the big Hollywood star is secretly a dragon.”
“So, that was real too? They’re dragons?”
Finley nodded. “And stubborn pains in the ass. But they grow on you.” She looked over at Ash, her body aching to curl up next to him.
Her fingers reached up and skimmed over her neck, over the choker that wrapped around there. She didn’t like that it was the only thing protecting her from Grey’s influence, but she was glad to have the weight of it back again. She just didn’t like that because she wore it, Ash was unprotected.
Pru monitored Ash and Tristian until the sun had long come up to greet Miami. Both of them were in and out of consciousness most of the early morning. Gavin made everyone breakfast.
Cillian and Henrik came down to check on everyone for a while and then left again.
People came and went, time and again, but Finley couldn’t leave. Not until she knew what Ash meant.
Not until she knew if she still had a shot at being his mate.
Once Ash was finally recovered enough to function and his wound was nearly healed, Pru let him go. Ash drove Finley and Olivia back to his place not wanting to let either one of them out of his sight.
Grey was still out there.
Olivia opted to hide out in one of the guest bedrooms.
Ash hauled Finley up to his bedroom and dropped her on the bed.
“You seem to be feeling better,” she said chuckling.
“You seem to be feeling better too.” He crawled onto the bed and dropped down next to him. “Any signs of Grey?”
“I don’t think so, but when you put the heartstone back on me, it sent him packing. Do you want to take it off me and make sure?”
He scowled. “No.”
“Ash…”
“You can take it off, Sawyer. The only reason why it didn’t come off before was because you didn’t want to take it off, but knowing you have the capability should take care of that.”
Finley curiously put her hands around her neck and gently took the choker off. She set the tourmaline down on the bed between them. Ash shifted on the bed, his eyes on the heartstone.
“How do you feel?” he asked finally looking up at her.
“The same.” She wanted to reach for the heartstone again. “He kept saying that I was his.”
Ash emitted a low growl deep in his chest. “You’re not his.”
Finley met his gaze. She wondered if he still wanted her. She’d been used by a vampire. Kissed another dragon. Being a mate was sacred. Did he still want her?
Ash got off the bed. “Henrik and I are leaving soon. We got word Grey is in Chicago.”
Finley’s back straightened, her shoulders pulled tight, and her hand covered her stomach. “You’re leaving?”
