“Come by anytime.”

“Yeah,” comes her quiet reply.

The door shuts and Leah comes down the hallway looking thoroughly concerned.

“She’s not all right.”

“No, it didn’t sound like it,” I agree.

Leah chews on her bottom lip and I take her in my arms. “After Boone gets home, we’ll make sure he checks on her, yeah?”

“That’d be good.”

She doesn’t seem to relax any so I suggest, “Should we text him? Let him know she stopped by?”

Leah shakes her head. “I think it’ll be better to let him have a fun afternoon because whatever she was here for, I have a feeling it’s going to rock his world.”

She is definitely right about that. Even I have a sick feeling about it and I didn’t even get a look at the girl.

“How about we sit down and watch a movie?”

Her grateful smile almost makes me drop to my knees.

“That’d be good.”

We settle on the couch, with me pulling her in close to me, and do a terrible job of concentrating on the movie in front of us. I couldn’t even tell someone what it was if I was under duress because the scent of her subtle perfume and the feel of her against me is all I can think about.

I kiss the side of her head and lay a hand on her thigh, tracing a lazy figure-eight pattern with the tip of my finger. She practically purrs against me and nuzzles her nose into my neck.

“You smell good,” she murmurs, kissing me.

“So do you. I have no idea what movie we’re watching,” I admit.

She giggles and looks up at me. “Me either.”

“Bedroom?”

She nods excitedly and I pull her off the couch.

Just as we’re about to enter through the doorway of her bedroom, the doorbell rings. Again.

I groan and hit my head against the wall.

“What is it with today?”

She laughs again. “It’s never like this. I promise.”

“Make whoever it is go away. Unless it’s Daisy then plant her ass in here and help her.”

Her eyes soften and I know I said the right thing, which makes my chest swell.

The doorbell rings again and I have a feeling it’s not Daisy. She was too shy to be determined like that.

Leah opens the door and I hear a deep growl, “We need to fucking talk.”

“Brett. What are you doing here?”

“Did I not just say we gotta talk?”
