“What are you doing?”

“Giving you your room back.”

“No, that’s okay. You stay here, and I’ll take the guest bedroom.” He then lowered his voice. “Although ideally I’d stay here with you.”

“Nick—”

“I know. I know. I won’t be disrespectful to your father or my mother. But I do insist on you keeping this room. I’ll take the guest bedroom.”

“Okay.”

“Wanna head up to the rooftop?”

“Yours or mine?” I joked, knowing full well that my house and rooftop were long gone.

“How about ours?” he asked.

I smiled, biting my lip. He always knew the perfect thing to say.

We climbed up the ladder from his balcony. It felt like years since we’d been there together, but as soon as I lay back, with Nick’s arm underneath my head, everything came back to me. Everything was normal again.

Chapter 17

“It’shard to believe we’ve been looking at the same sky at night but were so far away,” he said, sighing. “It feels so good to be home, to have you in my arms.”

“Aren’t you tired? Do you want to rest?” I asked.

“No, baby. I have so much adrenaline pumping, I won’t be able to fall asleep for a while.”

“How are you feeling, emotionally? I mean, you’ve been gone and secluded, and now you’re back.”

“I couldn’t be happier to be back, but I’m also proud of what I accomplished.”

“I’m proud of you too, Nick. You set out a goal and never gave up.”

“And you – I mean, from the looks of the new cakes, cupcakes, and pastries, it looks like you’ve had your hands full.”

“As soon as the new bakery’s running, I’m going to open the online store. We’ll start shipping to nearby cities. I’ve planned a marketing campaign. I’ll be able to have a delivery system with a larger radius than I originally thought, which will also reduce our shipping costs. And I followed through and sent samples the way Carter suggested. I already have two large orders for cupcake wedding cakes this fall, and the website design is almost complete.”

“Look at you, my businesswoman. You have no idea how smart and sexy you sound.”

I chuckled, “You’re just saying that because you love me.”

“I do love you. And I missed you.”

He curled his arm underneath my head, lifting me higher and bringing my lips to his. The strength of him, holding me, still surprised me. It was all new and exciting. I opened my mouth wider, welcoming the swift strokes of his tongue, feeling my breasts swell at the intensity of our kiss. It felt like I was getting to know him all over again, kissing and touching him for the very first time. The outline of his leg muscles was pressing against my softer thighs. I was getting lost in his body, my hands exploring all the new contours of a fit man, and liking it. Soon enough, I was on top of him, pulling my fingers through his shorter hair, circling my hips over his erection, feeling the heat between us ready to burst.

When Nick pulled away, we were both heaving. “You take my breath away,” he whispered. “I’ve been thinking about this day every minute while away. You kept me sane. You’re the one who helped me push through the physical and mental pain. I couldn’t have done it without knowing that you were waiting here for me.”

I looked up, exposing my neck as he sent simmering hot kisses along my skin. “I’ve been waiting for you too, Nick. It’s been so long.”

His hand swept over my curves, down to my hips, then lower to my dress, which he slowly scrunched up until my behind was exposed. I pressed my pelvis harder against him, wanting to feel all of him on me. He kept kissing me, his lips making a journey all over: my cheeks, neck, and back up to my ear, while grasping my ass with his full palms, squeezing it gently.

“Best buns I’ve held in my entire life.”

I laughed, my ass tightening in his grip. Counting the number of buns that he’d held at the bakery, that was definitely a compliment.

“The only human buns you’ve held?” I asked.
