“Kid, I checked with the log of the posted dead, and Gail Henderson is on that list. But, if you’re sure, I’ll make the call.” Jon looks to me for a confirmation.
“I’m sure, Jon. I know it.” I’m so glad that Lincoln came with me, as I feel a void when he’s gone. This moment would feel wrong without him holding me up, being my rock.
“Okay, kiddo, okay. I’ll call it in and let you know.” Jon looks over at Lincoln, eyeing him. He knows what’s been going on with us; me moving in, his fight, all of it. He worries for me like a dad, and I appreciate it. I hug Jon in a powerful embrace, and kiss him on the cheek. He’s always been there for me, and I know he’ll make this happen. Her family needs to know she’s alive. In a coma, but alive.
“If anything more comes out of that head of yours,” he says as he taps me on the forehead, “make sure you let Rush or I know. Got it?” I nod my agreement.
“I gotta get going. Make sure you go in and see her. It’s been awhile, and I think you need it too.”
“Sure, Jon. I will. Thanks again for everything.” He turns and makes his way down the hallway, towards the nurse’s desk. After he leaves, Lincoln turns to me with a vicious grin.
“You’re some tough shit. That man makes me shudder, and ya mold him like putty. Christ, ya moldmelike putty. You have somethin’ about ya that others can’t help but love. I know I do.” He says it with a serious face. I know it was a twofold comment.
“I’m not that tough. It’s all a front.”
Lincoln taps just above my heart. “Not here. This is strong.”
He makes me weak within. I can’t help but smile at the big strong MMA fighter that can turn me to a puddle of emotion with a few select words.
“Come on. Let’s go see Gail. I’ll be with ya the whole time, and if anythin’ happens, let me know. I can take the pain and shoulder it for ya.” Peering into my eyes, Lincoln dips his massive frame down, pecks me on the lips, and pulls me lovingly towards the room that holds a woman from my past.
