“I know.” Her sobs settle down to light sniffles, but I keep holding her.
A knock on the door followed by, “Hey, Dad,” has Ellie stiffening in my hold.
“Come in, son.” My hand rubs along her back as Damon enters. “What’s up?” He appears agitated.
Sitting on the bed at my feet, he hands me his phone. “They know.” My blood runs cold again as I read the headlines stating that I’ve coerced Ellie into a relationship to get her father a better deal.
He hasn’t even fucking accepted one.
“I’m off the case. It doesn’t matter.” I give the device back to him.
I understand how damaging a headline like that could be, but I’ve spoken with my chief and deputy chief, and they know the deal. I’ve gotten their support in writing, no matter what the media prints.
“They’re going to ruin you.” At Ellie’s tearful proclamation, I glance down at her.
“No, sweetheart, they can’t touch me. I’ve taken all the steps needed in order to protect my career and you.”
Brushing the hair off her face, I lean down and kiss her forehead. A plan about how to deal with this is already forming in my mind.
“What do you want me to do?” Damon asks, his concern shining bright in eyes that match my own.
“There’s nothing to do. It seems impossible, but I promise everything will be okay.” The first step I’ve come up with is getting the three of us out of town for a few days. It’s been stressful, and we could use the break.
“You sure about that?” Damon’s skepticism is something I’m always prepared for.
“Just trust me.”
“I do,” Ellie interjects, her head laying over my heart as it skips a beat. Her innate trust is something I’ll cherish forever.
Nearing nine at night, I’ve got our plans settled and in motion. I wanted to make sure there was no press around the house, which, thankfully, there hasn’t been, and I was hoping the neighbors would be settled in for the night so they wouldn’t pay attention to us.
Damon has gone to spend a few days with his grandparents–my parents–in Gainesville. They have some repairs on Mom’s porch swing they’ve needed help with, and Damon has been eager to see them and help out.
Ellie and I are heading to a cottage on Flagler Beach, about an hour and a half away, so we’ll be close if needed.
As I finish packing the truck, Ellie comes out with a small basket. “I made snacks.”
I grin, and I can’t help but admire this woman’s resilience. She gets down, sure, cries and screams into a pillow, but then she picks herself up and carries on. I’m in complete awe of her strength.
“You’re amazing,” I tell her as I take the basket and place it on the console before helping her in. “I’m so fucking proud of you, Ellie.”
She rests her soft hand against my jaw as she leans forward and kisses me tenderly. “Thank you, Daddy.”
I groan. She knows just where to get me.
“Keep playing with me, and you won’t like the consequences,” I warn as I buckle her belt.
“Maybe I will.” Her sweet whisper makes my dick twitch behind my zipper as I close her door and make my way to the driver’s side.
After raising the garage door, I start the truck and begin backing out, pleased to see the street’s clear. For the most part, my address is private, but that doesn’t mean people at the precinct won’t leak it or neighbors won’t call it in. Or hell, the school won’t share it.
“I’ve never been to Flagler Beach,” Ellie says as she digs into the basket, pulling out cranberry and turkey sandwiches with what I think is arugula. I’m skeptical, but I take a bite and surprisingly enjoy it. “It’s a cranberry jam,” she informs me, laughing at how I hesitated.
“I like it.” She smiles, satisfied, and I can’t wait to have her smiling in satisfaction for an entirely different reason.
The drive to Flagler is mostly quiet, filled only with the low music from the radio and the occasional comment one of us makes. It’s a comfortable silence when we pull into the cottage's driveway. I’m grateful it has a keypad entry because I could feel Ellie’s growing tension as we entered the city limits, her worry about being recognized tangible.
“This is beautiful.” She stares out over the ocean, which is just feet away from the cottage, as she gets out.
