Chapter Four

“What is with that goofygrin on your face?” Evelyn asked once we got home. “Is this still to do with that guy?”

“No! I had a good night, that’s all,” I lied, stretching my neck from side to side.

“Oh! You didn’t tell meTheowas coming to theSecret Assassinmidnight release with us.” She raised an eyebrow at me. “I had to find out fromhim.”

“I tried to get out of it, but the guy bought a ticket without even asking. He booked Monday off, too, the same as me! I’ve goteveryshift with him next week!” Evelyn burst into a fit of the giggles. “It’s not funny! What the fuck do I do?”

“You find that fuck hot dude that saved you, and perhaps Theo might get the message that he’s not your type.”

“He was fucking mighty fine, wasn’t he?” I exhaled. Those eyes!

“The grinisabout the dude!Alora Windwood!Do you have a littlecrush?”

“Fuck off,” I laughed, throwing a pillow at her. “I’m going to bed.”

“If you need batteries for your vibrator, they’re in the top drawer over there.” I gave her the finger as I stormed into my bedroom. I didnothave a fucking crush on a dude I didn’t even know!

MY DREAM WAS IN SLOWmotion. I watched him glide towards me, but this time we were the only ones in the club. Smoke danced around our feet as we stood there motionless, gazing at each other. The gentle thump of the music pumped in my chest, or was that my heartbeat?

I tried to memorise every detail of his face—I embedded it into my brain in case I never dreamed of him again—his high cheekbones, the way his nose curved perfectly down his face, how his lips looked rough and soft at the same time and that slight curl on the ends of his dark, mid-length hair. Oh, could I run my hands through it, just once?

“Don’t,” he threatened as I reached for him. “For once, why can’t you keep your distance?” I didn’t understand his question, but that voice... Oh, the voice Iknew! It was the voice of my dark shadows. Somehow, my mind had mixed the two together. “Alora, you’re not listening to me!”

“It’s a dream. Why would I need to listen?” He gave me a dazzling smile while shaking his head. I became lost with need for him. My whole body hummed in a way I’d never felt before. “Kiss me,” I gasped, stepping towards him.

“No,” he whispered, gliding away from my touch.

Well, shit! I was even harsh with myself in my dreams!

EVELYN AND I BOTH HADthe hangover from hell the next day. Neither of us even surfaced from our bedrooms until late afternoon.

I was making myself a coffee when she wandered into the kitchen, stretching her arms behind her back. She gave me a suspicious grin as she sat on the sofa. “Have you only woken up, too?”

“Yeah, I didn’t realise how hungover I was.”
