“So do your people. And the Haven is the safest place I know. It was created by magic, goodmagic. Faerie magic. It’s shielded, you know that.”
Kam stared at her in consternation. The Haven was the reason he’d given control of the Zone to her and Beast. A magical sanctuary, they’d stumbled on it by accident during their dangerous quest to break the curse.
It was a world within a world. A place of enchantment where creatures thought to be extinct, like faeries, lived and thrived. He knew how much it meant to Nat and Beast.
“But you’d be revealing its existence!”
“In exchange for saving lives. It’s a good trade. The demons will never be able to find it.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Even if they do, the Haven only has one way in and one way out. It’s defendable.”
“Nat, are you sure? Is Beast sure?”
“It was his idea. And the faeries have agreed.”
“But the risk to the Haven…!”
“We know the risks. And if demons try to get in, we’ll be ready.” She gave a wolfish grin. “Personally, I’d love to slay a demonicus spirit. It’d look good on my resumé.”
“I… I don’t know what to say.”
“Say yes. How many people can you send?”
“Can you take a couple of thousand?”
“We can. It’ll be a little rough, they’ll need to build their own shelters, but we have plenty of food.”
“Nat, I can’t thank you enough.” Kam’s voice cracked a little. “You don’t know what this means.”
“To have somewhere safe to rest your head? Yes. I know exactly what it means.” She touched Kam’s shoulder. “We’ll get through this together, your Majesty. Everyone. All of us. Under your command.”
He gave her a twisted smile.
“You think I’m up to the task, slayer?”
“I know you are. Now stop wallowing in self-doubt and get your butt in gear.” He raised a brow.
“I’m still Emperor, you know.”
“Sorry. I meant, get your butt in gearyour Majesty.”
Nineteen
Washington D.C.
“Where are we going?”
They’d been driving for nearly an hour. Dani had to admire Blake’s resourcefulness. He’d procured a vehicle using a fake ID and they’d been on the road within an hour.
“There’s another safe-house south of DC. We’ll hole up there till tomorrow.”
“Great. More five star accommodation.”
He gave her an amused glance.
“Sorry, princess. Unlike you, I can’t magic up fake dollars.”
