As soon as they pulled up, staff brought out soft blankets and a stuffed animal for the children and led them into the kitchen. A table, spread with chocolate milk and cookies made everyone smile except Joe. His solemn face broke Thomas’ heart.

His mother came in. “Oh my dears. I heard some special angels have come to visit!” she bent down to greet each one.

Thomas backed up, watching his mother work her magic. Her eyes met his and her worry was apparent in the stretch of a breath, but then she turned back to the children, all twinkly and full of love.

He checked his phone. Dahlia responded. I’m impressed. And annoyed at the same time.

Thomas burst out laughing and everyone in the kitchen turned to him in surprise.

Why am I not surprised?

You know me too well?

Not well enough.

The kids finished their cookies and everyone was staring at him.

He pocketed his phone and clapped his hands. “Now, I’m going to head back and check on your mother. Do you guys want to see your rooms for the night?”

The girls jumped up and down. And Joe approached. His big eyes slammed Thomas back to the moment, their hope, worry, and trust making his heart ache. “You’ll take care of her, won’t you?”

Thomas swallowed and nodded. “I will. I promise.”

Joe nodded and the trust that Thomas would actually do as he promised, humbled Thomas to the core. He kissed his mother. “I’ll keep you posted.”

She squeezed him back. “Thank you.”

As he headed to the hospital, he had little hope that the children could still be a part of their mother’s life, but he did hope she would receive the help she needed, if she survived this latest binge.
