I could hardly believe that the Iron who had not even known how to flirt was taking me so well. “I never thought you would want to be fucked so hard.”

She met my gaze with a fierce one of her own. “Then you don’t know the real me.”

My mind wandered to Zav and the idea of her spreading her legs for the Taori. I’d never been the possessive type. I’d never wanted to possess a female for more than one night before, but Britta had awakened a dormant beast of desire within me. The thought of Zav touching her made fury stoke the heat pooling in my core.

“I would never have let Zav fuck you,” I rasped as I drove inside her.

“No?” Her laugh was throaty and soft, almost teasing.

I gave a rough shake of my head. “I would have fought him for you. I would have fucked you in front of him, if I had to.”

She rolled her head back. “Maybe I would have liked that.”

I knifed up, grasping her by the hips, my fingers biting into her soft flesh. Lifting her ass off the bed, I held her legs wide, thrusting so hard and fast that her breasts bounced with each thrust. Pleasure consumed me like a scorching fire, as her body began to ripple around me for a second time, her hips jerking with each spasm.

I teetered on the edge as I watched pleasure suffuse her face, her mouth falling open. When she screamed my name, I lost all control as ecstasy crashed over me in wave after vicious wave. Thrusting inside her one last time, I threw my head back and roared as I pulsed hot into her.

Collapsing onto the bed next to her, I rolled her on top of me as I tried to regain the ability to breathe. My hand traced the length of her spine down to the small of her back, the rising and falling of my chest lifting her, as well.

“You are not what I expected,” I rasped.

She lifted her head and tilted it at me, confusion wrinkling her brow. “No?”

I shook my head. “You are even better.” Then I smacked her ass lightly. “And significantly naughtier.”

Before she could respond, a pounding on the door made us both go still.

So much for basking in the glow.

Chapter

Thirty-Seven

Britta

My heart lurched at the heavy thump against the door. I froze, my fingers digging into Kann's bicep as we lay on the hard academy mattress, our clothes scattered across the floor. I’d been snatched from euphoria back to the cruel reality of our situation, as the walls shuddered and the floor moved.

The second knock hit even harder, and it was followed by a furtive voice.

"Kann!"

Kann jerked upright beside me, and I rolled fully onto the bed. "That's Volten's voice.” His voice was barely a whisper, but it was thick with disbelief. Before I could fully process what he'd said and the possibility that Volten could be in the holo simulation, he was already on his feet.

"Are you sure?" I whispered, scrambling to locate my clothes in the low light and rumbling room. My hands shook as I grabbed my bra from where it had landed near the desk. Ihooked it on quickly and then snatched my shirt from the floor. The fabric was inside out, and I fought to right it, my mind racing.

This couldn’t be right. It didn’t make sense. “This could be a trap.”

"I know my best friend's voice, but no one from this ancient version of the academy does.” Kann crossed to the door with purposeful steps, and I had to bite back a hysterical laugh.

"Wait! You're not wearing anything!"

Kann glanced down at himself and then up at me. He grinned and the warmth of it doused much of my panic. I tossed him his uniform pants, watching as he tugged them on with quick, efficient movement. Now I knew that the Blade went commando.

Even as I had faith that Kann would protect me, doubt gnawed at my stomach. How could Volten be here? How was he here, even as the program was collapsing?

My pulse raced as Kann pulled the shirt over his head and reached for the old-fashioned door handle. I shoved my feet into my boots, not bothering with the laces, and braced myself for Drexians to rush in and take us prisoner.

But when the door swung open, it actually was Volten who burst in, his familiar features both completely out of place and achingly welcome.
