“Yes, they did. She’s gone, and Liam’s ours. So, what do you think about dating a single father? If you were to marry Cash, you’d instantly be a mother. Is that something you can see yourself being good at?” Lola questions.
“This isn’t a job interview, Aunts,” Cash interjects.
“Can you talk, Livi? Not one word yet and that’s a little suspicious. Might be hiding something,” Lottie ends with a pointed look to Lola.
“You two haven’t given her a chance to speak yet,” Cash argues.
“Okay, then. Livi–speak,” Lola snips out.
Three sets of eyes stare at me, and I can see the resemblance. I look down at Liam and see it there too. I grin at him before looking back up to the adults.
“Hi. It’s nice to meet you, ladies. Yes, I can talk. My dad would tell you I could do that from birth. He exaggerates though. To answer your other questions, Cash and I aren’t dating. We seem to be having some time management issues, but I’m hopeful that will change soon.”
“Have you ever dated a single father?”
“Are you good mother material?”
“Do you know about his MC?”
“Have you ever been married before?”
“Are you married now?”
“What in the hell is wrong with your dog’s ass?”
The questions are shot at me so quickly I’m not sure which lady asked which question, but my grin turns to outright laughter at the look Cash is giving his aunts. That look alone would stop most men, but it doesn’t faze the women. When he tries to shush them, they just talk over him. The questions continue without a break long enough for me to say a word.
“Are your parents still together or divorced?”
“Are you an only child?”
“Do you think Vex is sexy?”
“Oh, good one, Lola! Who’s sexier–Vex or Trigger?”
“Enough!” Cash shouts as he drops his face into his palms.
I know he’s not mad because even though I can’t see his face, I can see his shoulders shaking in laughter. His shouting does halt the interrogation, but it also startles Liam into crying. Liam’s crying makes Snots start barking, and it’s loud.
I lift Liam to my shoulder and rub his back while cooing at him. He continues to fuss, but he calms a little. As I’m doing this, Cash snaps his fingers, and Snots waddles to his side and sits down. After a few more barks, he settles. Cash waits a beat and then stands up, walks to my chair and gently takes Liam.
“Hand him over. It’s Auntie time,” Lola says while placing her purse down and holding out her arms.
Cash does as he’s ordered, and everyone, including Snots, is quiet while Lola sits back with a now contented Liam in her arms. Lottie leans closer and runs the back of a finger across Liam’s cheek affectionately.
“Lars and Terry had nothing but nice things to say about you,” Lola informs me.
“But that doesn’t mean we’re accepting it at face value. Who Cash spends time with is his business, but it’s our duty to keep an eye on you until we’re convinced you’re good enough for him. No offense intended. Just being extra cautious now that he has Liam to consider too,” Lottie adds.
“I understand. No offense taken. I’m glad Cash has people like you in his life,” I answer sincerely.
Both ladies must hear it in my voice because they suddenly switch gears as if operating with one brain between them.
“Good. Now that you’ve been forewarned about us, why don’t you two go out tonight? We have nowhere else to be and are happy to stay with Liam,” Lola states.
“Yes, that’s a great idea. You need to go be an adult for a while, Cash. Take Livi and go out for dinner. No time like the present,” Lottie agrees.
“We’ll even keep an eye on that wrinkled pile of fur,” Lola generously offers.
