“Who could do that?” I whisper.
“She had no problem doing it from what I could tell,” Cash responds with a hint of disgust in his voice.
“Finding out you’re a dad and having a new baby to deal with is a damn good excuse for forgetting something as simple as a date, Cash. I’m so sorry you had to find out this way though. And I’m apologizing now for what I thought about you when you didn’t show up,” I say.
“Not your fault. You didn’t know. I should’ve gotten your number the day we met, but I would’ve forgotten to call anyway,” he answers with a small smile.
“I take it that you have never been around infants?” James asks.
“Not really. I mean, Gunner and Axel both have kids, but I never had to care for them.”
“Well, rest easy, he’s not broke. He’s an infant, and they make a lot of noise. Word of advice though. Learn songs that aren’t going to turn him into a serial killer, yeah?” James quips.
Cash grins and nods his head before asking, “I tried burping him. It didn’t work. What am I doing wrong?”
“Hard to say. Maybe he just wasn’t ready or maybe you patted his back a little harder than he liked. Kids are strange little demons. If one thing doesn’t work, try something else. You’ll find what works for the two of you eventually,” James responds.
“Hope it’s before the neighbors call in a noise complaint,” Cash mutters.
James stands and hands Liam back to Cash. I grin when I see the contrast between the size of Cash’s hands and Liam’s tiny body. Cash carefully cradles him, and my grin grows when I see the look on Cash’s face. The baby might be giving him nightmares, but he’s already attached. This tall, muscled man loves his child. For some reason, the little deaf boy comes to mind, and I make a silent plea that he gains a father that looks at him someday like Cash is doing with Liam.
“You have kids?” Cash asks James.
“No, but I have several younger brothers and sisters. You could say I’m kind of a baby expert after helping my mom with them. I do hope to have a few of my own someday.”
“You, Livi?”
“No, except Snots and I’m not doing so well as even a doggie mom.”
“You love that pile of fur and fat, Livi. That’s the most important ingredient to being a parent anyway,” James adds.
“I never really thought about it before Liam,” Cash states.
“You can let your club members know that I promise not to let James harass them anymore. Right, James?” I ask with one eyebrow going up a fraction.
“Harass? Such an ugly word, Liv,” James replies with a sniff.
“No cavity searches, James.”
“Not even one for the hot biker with long hair?”
“Not even him. Besides, he’s married, remember?”
“Not that one. The one named Pigeon. Brother was smokin’,” James declares.
“No bikers or birds for you,” I answer.
“You’re crushing my dreams, girl.”
Grinning at James, I turn to Cash.
“Thanks for explaining, Cash. While no woman wants to be forgettable, you had a solid reason for it. Your kid’s lucky to have you.”
“You still want to have that date, I’ll be there. Think on it and let me know.”
“I will. Our shift’s almost over and we have paperwork to finish up. I’ll call later if that’s okay.”
“Talk then.”
