“It’s not because he was born with abnormally large testicles. It’s because Ava kicked them into next week once, and they swelled exponentially. End of story. Where’s my beer?” growls the older biker.
“Ex-girlfriend?” I ask Horse while trying to keep a straight face.
“Prez’s wife. She was kickboxing with Horse. He got distracted and got drop-kicked for it. She felt bad, and he felt worse. The rest of us loved it. You got a name?” asks the biker.
“Trigger, Livi,” Cash does the introductions again.
“Trigger?” I question while sitting up straighter and looking him over again.
“Yeah, why? My name mean something to you?”
“Tessie works with you, right? She’s mentioned your name before,” I answer honestly. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews of this man from her. If Tessie’s telling the truth, Trigger can do everything including walk on water.
“How do you know Tessie?” Trigger asks while taking a careful look at me too.
“Met her at the school,” I answer while shooting a look at Cash.
“You work there?”
“Livi claims to have met Tessie while teaching a drug awareness class at the school,” Cash inserts with a smirk.
“You police?” Trigger questions bluntly.
“Yes. DPD. And I did meet her there, Cash,” I insist.
“Do I want to even know how many times you’ve met her, Livi?” Trigger asks with a huge grin and raised eyebrow.
“You’re the cop? The one with the partner who wants to visit no man’s land?” shouts Pigeon while pointing a finger in my face.
Cash knocks Pigeon’s finger away from my face while I start laughing. The look on Pigeon’s face is priceless. Everyone around the table is laughing except him.
“James. Yes, that’s my partner. He’s a great guy once you get to know him,” I assure him.
“I don’t want to get to know him! I don’t want that large fucker anywhere in my vicinity!”
“Then start making that happen by keeping your hands out of Livi’s face,” Cash retorts.
Pigeon’s eyes dart to Cash as he raises both hands in the air.
“Sorry, Livi. Won’t happen again,” Pigeon says to me but is still keeping his eyes on Cash.
“It’s fine,” I answer while dropping a hand to Cash’s thigh.
“It’s not, but it won’t happen again,” Cash replies as his hand covers mine.
“Buy the lady a drink and all will be forgiven,” advises Trigger.
Pigeon takes the advice while Cash and I get back to our meal. The guys chat, and I listen, but I don’t add to the conversation. There’s food in front of me, and I’m hungry. It takes a few minutes before I realize the guys have grown quiet. Looking up, I see all eyes on me.
I set my fork down and wipe my mouth with my napkin. I’m thinking I missed something when Trigger speaks up.
“We have a club brother named Chubs. Have you met him?”
“Yes, I have. Nice guy. Why do you ask?”
“Are you two related?” Horse asks.
“Not as far as I know,” I answer.
