No one’s too chipper about it.
“Come on. This is the real one. We’ll call a few friends and liven the place up.” He turns to Sera. “Tell me you’ll help me plan a party in...” He looks at his watch. “Three hours.”
“Since we’re celebrating Ivy,” Sera gives her a small smile, “then yes, I will.”
Nick high-fives her. “You’re the best secretary in the world, Sera. And you, Zane...”
“I’m not planning a party.” Zane’s voice is as cold as the breeze rippling around us.
“Right. You can hang around and not get in anyone’s way.” Nick turns to me. “Brody...”
He must see the look I send his way because he shudders.
“You do... you,” he concludes, throwing his arms around Zane and Sera. “Come on, my troops! We have a party to plan!”
Zane shakes off his hand while Sera joins in his silliness.
When I turn back to Ivy, she’s smiling at their exit.
Then, her emerald gaze meets mine. “Chatterbox doesn’t want a party?”
I’d take her up on the tease if I had the emotional bandwidth for anything else apart from the feelings trying to drown me. If I don’t let it out now, I’ll explode from being too full of them.
I told myself Ivy was always on my mind because of the plan to trap her dad, but that was far from the truth. It’s because of something more profound. More consuming.
“We’ll go after. After we speak.”
The slight smile playing in her eyes fades away. “Oh?”
“Yes. I have something to say to you. Somethingsto tell you.”
She blinks, apparently confused. I am confused, too. I don’t understand myself, and I hope that speaking to her will help clear shit up for me too.
“Oh, sure. Fine.” She nods. “Go on. Tell me.”
CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
Ivy
Brody glances around us. “Not here. Come with me.”
Okaaay.
“Keys.” He holds out a hand.
He carpooled with the guys and Sera coming here, but this time, he gets behind the wheel of Sera’s small car and drives us back to the resort.
I can’t keep my eyes off him. He’s tense, squeezing the life out of the poor steering wheel. His behavior is making me nervous, too. What could he have to tell me that could have him in such a state? It’s not like he can get pregnant for me.
The thought brings a smile to my lips. That’s when he turns to me with a line between his brows. Before I can catch his eyes, though, he’s back to tearing down the tarmac. I’d ask him to slow down if I wasn’t so eager to hear what he has to say.
Soon, the resort’s buildings come into view. He parks the car and takes my hand, leading us to our room. His hurried footsteps have nerves prickling down my back. Did something terrible happen? If it did, the guys and Sera showed no indication.
This is all Brody.
He lets us into the room. I turn around immediately, folding my arms across my chest and squaring off my shoulders, bracing for what he has to say. It can’t be good, given the way he’s acting.
He turns from locking the door and meets my eyes. Almost taken aback to see me standing there, waiting for him.
