“Mm-hmm.”

The way he smirked at me left me wondering if he knew something I didn’t. I had Ethan, Ty, and Dom to confide in if I needed to, but I didn’t really know who Caleb had.Are he and Dave friends? Do they chat about their lives like I do with my crew?

Dave slid the coffees to me and boxed up a cinnamon roll. “I’ll let Caleb heat it up himself whenever he has a chance to eat it.”

“Good call.” I asked Dave about how things were going with his boyfriend to get the conversation away from me while he rang me up.

I should’ve known I wouldn’t get out of there without one more attempt. Dave held on to my card when I tried to take it back.

“Caleb’s a good guy.”

“I know.”

“As long as you know.”

“I said I know, Dave. He’s a good guy.”

“Okay.”

Mikey walked in. “Are you playing matchmaker again?” He kissed Dave’s cheek.

Dave melted like a Hershey’s Kiss on a peanut butter blossom cookie. “I just want everyone to be happy like we are.”

“I know, babe. It’s adorable.” Mikey winked at me over Dave’s shoulder.

I seized the opportunity to make a break for it.

When I got outside to Caleb’s truck, only one person was waiting for a sandwich.

“Hey!” Caleb greeted me with an enormous smile.

“I brought you sustenance. Dave made whatever your usual is.” I sniffed it. “Smells amazing.” The scent was familiar. “Cardamom?”

Caleb kept his attention on his work behind the counter. “Uh, yeah. I’ve been ordering cardamom lattes lately.”

I smiled into my cup. Standing off to the side, I waited for Caleb to finish whatever he was making for the woman hovering at the window.

Once she was gone, I placed Caleb’s coffee and cinnamon roll on the counter. “A little sugar fix to get you through the day.”

“Cinnamon roll?”

I nodded.

“Hell yeah. Thanks.” He took a deep drink of the coffee then bent over to rest his elbows on the counter. “How’s your day going?”

“Not bad, but I might have made yours more difficult. Hence the coffee and sugar.”

He pouted, and I wanted to nibble at his protruding bottom lip. “You mean this isn’t a social call with treats? Here I thought you were just coming by to say hi.”

His easy flirting pulled me in, made me brave. “I suppose I could’ve just texted you if I didn’t want to come by and say hi.”

The wattage of his smile grew. “That’s true. So, how did you ruin my day?”

“Do you remember Mabel?”

“The woman from the Chamber of Commerce?” His eyes widened. “What did you do? Did you tell her I wanted to join or something? I mean, I will join, but like, I don’t want to get involved in some committee or something. I used to be on the board for my last pod. No thanks.”

“No, no.” I cut off his panicked rambling. “She’s hosting an event for chamber recruitment next month and was planning to hire a caterer from out of town. I may have mentioned that you do catering. I thought it would be a good way for people to meet you.” I prayed he wouldn’t be annoyed with my meddling. “Frank Ambrose is heavily involved with the chamber.”
