I narrowed my eyes with suspicion. Lucky? He thought she was lucky? It was much more a curse than a gift… She owned the tattered heart of a man who was also partially a monster. A monster lurking in his blood, ready to pounce at any moment… Yeah, that was shit luck right there.

“I know what I'm saying, Dom, and you won’t convince me otherwise. I’m a tad annoyed though,” he added with a playful sigh.

“Why?”

“I now owe my wife a hundred dollars.”

“I don’t get it.”

He shook his head. “Last week she bet me you were going to hook up before the end of the month.”

I looked at him, my mouth hanging open with surprise. Had I been so obvious? “You guys were gossiping about us like old ladies?”

“Maybe. You know at night in bed, my wife was much too pregnant for us to have fun so…”

“You’re an asshole,” I muttered, and at that moment, baby Marco started screaming his head off.

“Somebody’s hungry.” Luca laughed, grabbing the baby from me.

I stood up once I was free and shook my arm which was numb after holding the baby.

“What do you guys say we go grab lunch?” I asked India and Jude. “What would you like?” I asked Cassie and Luca, who gratefully gave us an order.

As we walked down the corridor to the elevator, I mustered all of my courage and grabbed India’s hand.

She looked down with surprise but didn’t remove it, and I felt my heart flutter in my chest. Was I morphing into a teenage girl?

“Let me take you out for dinner tonight. What do you say? Just the two of us?”

She grinned at me with a small nod. “It’s a date.”

Thank fuck for that! “Yes, it is.”

Chapter Eleven

DOM

A date.I wasn’t completely sure why I asked or why she agreed, but I was having second thoughts. Not about her, no. Nothing as good as India was supposed to be in my life, and I knew full well that she was just as good as I could ever get.

I was worried for her, about what being with me entailed. Mafia men were not better than old yentas, and if we were seen together in town, the rumor mill would be going full force, and she would be associated with me no matter what she did.

I took a quick shower and changed into a pair of black pants and a light-blue dress shirt.

I looked at myself in the mirror as I styled my hair, feeling lighter than I had in a long time despite what was at stake here.

My phone vibrated, indicating a text. I closed my eyes for a second before looking at it. I was just so close to getting a lovely evening with a stunning woman, an evening during which I could almost feel normal, and I wanted it to last just a few seconds more. I should have known better than to expect a break. Karma was a fucking bitch and my life was supposed to be a long penance for what I did, what I witnessed, what I didn't stop.

Here goes nothing. I reached for my phone on the dresser and opened the text from an unknown number.

I’m watching you.

My nostrils flared. That was the fucking bastard that left notes on my car; he was stepping up his game now. How did he even get my number?

Why just watch? Come closer and suck my dick,I typed back. I’d die before he thought he was scaring me. Was he annoying me? Definitely. But scared? No. Rare were the things that could scare me now.

I waited a couple of minutes and flipped my middle finger to the phone. That shut the fucker up.

I straightened my shirt, adjusted my belt, and looked at myself once more in the mirror.
