“Would you like to go with him in the ambulance?” Luca asked me as the men started to work on getting Dom on the stretcher.

“Is it okay?” I was grateful beyond words. “But… what about his car?”

Luca gave me a small smile before reaching for my arm and rubbing it gently. “I’ll drive it home. You go and be with Dom. You’re the one he’ll want by his side.”

“Yeah?” I looked at the team wheeling Dom outside. “How can you be sure?”

“Because if it was me, I’d want no one other than my Cassie.”

My heart swelled with love. Did Dom really see me like Luca saw Cassie? One could only hope.

“Yes, and I’ve a passenger I need to take back to the compound and have a chat with,” Matteo added darkly.

And I knew it probably meant that man was never going to be seen alive again, and as chilling as it was, I was okay with that.

If I had to lose a little of my humanity to join his world, it was a sacrifice I was willing to make. He was worth it.

Chapter Fifteen

DOM

I tried to turn on my side and winced. I clearly couldn’t be dead; it was too painful.

“Dom?”

I sighed when I felt a cool hand on my forehead.

“Dolcetta?” I barely recognized my own voice on how gravely it sounded.

“What happened?”

“Do you remember getting stabbed?”

Yes, that I remembered… I also remembered him calling a name I had done everything to forget.

I looked around the room and frowned. I was in my bed. How?

“How long ago?”

She sighed, sitting on a chair across from my bed. I finally noticed how tired she looked, with dark circles under her beautiful eyes, the taut lines of worry etched on her face.

“Two days, but they’ve been long.”

“Tell me what happened.”

And she told me the story. I felt horrible for putting her through all of that, risking her life to restrain the man and then committing a felony by threatening that vet to save me.

She could have gone to jail or worse, been killed by that man.

I loved her; that much was clear, but my life was tainting hers.

“I’m sorry.”

She leaned forward on her chair, a frown between her eyebrows. “Why?”

Couldn’t she see it? “For putting you through all this.”

She shook her head. “None of it matters. You’re here, alive. It was all worth it.”
