Dom grinned, and it was as cocky as it could be, once again making my heart leap into my chest. When exactly did I revert back to my teenage self?
“You were right to call me, li’l man. Luca thinks he’s good at that, but he is not me. I’ll teach you to do the best knots. What do you need that for? D’you have a hot date or something?”
I smiled at that. Dom was so good with Jude.
Jude shook his head, brushing his hand against the blue silk of his tie. “No, the babies will be here soon, and as their uncle I want to make a good first impression on them.”
“Hence the suit?”
“Yes.”
Dom nodded and knelt down. “Makes sense. Let me show you,” he offered, undoing his own black tie.
I had not noticed before how formally he was dressed; he probably had a meeting of some sort.
My heart melted as I kept looking at them and at the patience with which Dom was explaining and showing Jude how to do his tie.
I knew I was way past the point of simply peeking, and I crossed the line of spying like a creep a few minutes ago, but I couldn’t help it, seeing that big serious-looking man on his knees explaining to a pretty unique boy how to do his tie… and taking everything just as seriously as Jude was obviously taking it… Lord, it was a surprise that my ovaries had not yet exploded.
“Mobster Lady?”
I jerked back and met Dom’s dark gaze in the mirror. “What?”
“He asked you what you wanted?” Jude piped up, his tie now done even if a little crooked.
How long had I zoned out?
“Your sister would like to see you.”
“Oh!” He turned around briskly. “I’ll change quickly first. I want to keep the suit a surprise.”
I nodded and couldn’t help but smile as I watched him skip into his bathroom.
I turned to Dom who was refastening his tie. “He’s such an amazing little boy.”
He nodded. “The best there is.”
I could see how much he loved Jude, and that was another sign he was a good man, Mafia or not.
“Did you need anything else? Some snitch you want me to help put in a ditch?”
I rolled my eyes. “When are you going to leave me alone with that?” I asked, trying to convey an annoyance I didn’t really feel. I was enjoying the banter; it was so much better than the casual cold shoulder he used to give me.
“Not anytime soon. What is it you need though?”
“I need to go to town; could you please give me a ride?”
He waved his hand dismissively. “Give me a list of what you need. I'll get it.”
“No, I really need to go.”
He sighed as if I was being difficult. “Listen, whatever you need, I can get it, okay? I’m not that—”
“Tampons, I need tampons. My period came early so if you could get the one with applicators that’d be great. Also, don’t take the one for light—”
“Okay, let's go.” He looked away and I could not be sure, but it seemed like he faintly blushed under his olive skin. “Be by the car in five minutes,” he added, already on his way out of the room.
“Yes, that’s what I thought,” I muttered behind him, and the way he turned around to glare at me clearly showed that he heard me and was not amused, which strangely enough amused me even more.
