“I know and I’ll be taking over, but I’ll remain in the Estate. Cassie loves it.”

“And you love Cassie,” he finished for me.

“More than life.”

“It’s sort of cathartic, don’t you think? Findingtheperson.”

“It’s terrifying.”

Carter chuckled. “Yes, but in the best way possible. She gives me a reason to keep on going.”

“I’m sorry,” I finally admitted, albeit reluctantly.

“Don’t be. You did what you needed to do for yourself. I’m just glad to see you came through the other side.”

“Cassie helped a lot. She accepts it all, the good and the bad.”

“That’s how you know you found the one.”

“I fear one day she will wake up and just go, decide it’s too much and just walk away.”

Carter sighed. “That fear, I have it too, and it never really goes away. Over two years in this marriage, three kids later, and some mornings I still wake up in awe to have her beside me.”

“I’m going to marry her.”

“I know you will.” He shook his head. “I’m glad you’re back, Luca; you’ve been missed… Not by me but you know.”

I laughed. “Duly noted and for the record, I didn't miss you either.”

“I wouldn’t have dreamed of it.” And just like that, we were back to our old friendship.

Chapter Twenty-Two

CASSIE

I nervously wiped my hands on my pants as Luca and I waited for that big-shot family lawyer to call us into his office.

Luca grabbed my hand and kissed the back of it. “Everything is going to be fine.”

I forced a smile. “Yeah, I know, it’s just…Jude, you know.”

He nodded. “I do and I promised we’d get him back as soon as possible, and you know how I always keep my word.”

“Yes, I know you do and I trust you, but this…” I pointed at the lawyer's door. “No matter what, a lot of it is outside of your control.”

He gave me his cheeky grin that made my girlie parts quiver. “It’s cute that you think so. Tesora, I’m using the legal route, for now, but should it not work.” He shrugged. “One way or another, we’ll get our boy back.”

Our boy… It was little things like that that made me love him even more.

“Ms. West, Mr. Montanari? Mr. Gutsberg is ready for you.”

We walked into the biggest office I'd ever seen with a whole panel of windows at the back giving a premium view of the city.

I glanced at Luca. How much was he paying that lawyer?

The lawyer stood and motioned to the seats across from his desk.

“Mr. Montanari, what a pleasure to see you again. Please take a seat. Ms. West.” He bowed his head slightly before sitting at his desk in front of a pile of papers.
