“Help you do what?”

“Prove that you didn’t have an accident that night, that it was intentional. Prove that you weren't drunk and that these deaths are not on your conscience.”

That revelation had the effect of being punched in the stomach. I sat down heavily on the chair in his room, looking at him like he was someone else.

“You think—” I stopped. I couldn’t believe it was even possible. Could I erase this black mark from my book? “No.” I shook my head. “Nobody would have ever hurt Arabella or my mother.”

“Correct.” He nodded. “But as you probably remember, they were not supposed to be there that night. They were supposed to leave for the estate early, but you had that big fight with your father and your mother decided to stay. It was you and your father that were supposed to be in that car—not them.”

I rested my forearms on my thighs and looked down at my hands I had believed for years were covered in my family’s blood. “Who would do that?”

“You know who, Luca. He wanted the spot for as long as I can remember.”

I shook my head, still looking down at my hands. “Benny and Savio are idiots. Thick and obvious, they would have never managed to pull off something like that.”

“Unless they had help.”

I looked up. “Who?”

“The Armenians?” Dom shrugged. “Maybe they made a deal with them; they’re stupid enough to.”

I cocked my head to the side, pondering this. It was not impossible.

“Why did you go to the hospital today?”

“The writing in your medical file was different, the pages color didn’t fit. Cassie found a few unusual things in it so we went there. She was the diversion and I broke into the file room.”

“I see… So let me get this straight. You involved my woman in a potential murder plot against me by putting her in harm’s way.”

Dom winced. “Okay, it sounds bad when you’re saying it like that.”

“You know why? Because it fucking is!” I shouted. Just the thought of Cassie being hurt caused me so much pain I could hardly breathe.

“Luca—”

I raised a finger to stop him. “Her involvement stops now, understood?”

Dom nodded, at least having the decency to look sheepish.

“Did you find evidence?” Please say yes.

“Some, not as much as I’d like.”

I stood up, straightening my pants. “I’ll arrange a meeting with Matteo tomorrow; you’ll tell him everything you know, and we’ll take it from there, understood?”

“Yes.” He stood up too and grimaced when he saw his reflection in his mirror.

“And you keep her out of it! No more putting her in unnecessary danger or I swear to God…” I didn't need to finish that threat. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

“I love her too, you know,” Dom said as I reached the door. “Not as you do, but just as deeply.”

I turned my head to the side, keeping my hand on the handle. “I know you do. It is the only reason why you’re still standing.”

When I walked back into the room, Cassie was wrapped in a towel, freshly showered, and drying her hair.

She gave me a questioning look in the mirror, following me silently with her eyes until I reached the bathroom.

I met her eyes in the mirror and smiled at her.Ti amo, I mouthed.
