“Where’s Dom?”
“He’s in his room.” She pointed at the door. “I think I killed him with all the shopping.”
I nodded, watching her putting bags away.
“Did you have a good afternoon? Did you do anything interesting?”
Her step faltered and she turned around, a faint hue on her face. “No, not really.”
I sighed. She was a terrible liar, and the fact that she lied to me? It did break my heart a little.
“I’m going to see Dom, but I’ll be right back to take a shower and get ready.”
“Is everything okay? Did things work out with your uncle?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“I’ll wait for you, we can shower together. Save some water.” She blushed so deeply it made my heart squeeze in my chest with all the love I had for her. She was not yet used to flirting with me, at asking for what she wanted.
“No, go ahead,” I told her a bit more abruptly than I ought to. I was more annoyed with her than I anticipated.
She jerked back and looked down, trying to hide her pain at my rejection.
I should have left it at that; that’s what a capo should have done, but I was weak for her, and no matter what she did…as terrifying as it was to realize, I didn’t think there was a sin she could commit that I would not forgive.
“Tesora, if I get in this shower with you, there won’t be any dinner at Carter’s house. I’ll take you every way I can until neither of us can move.”
“Oh.” She gave me a side-look. “Maybe…maybe I'd like that.”
I growled, looking heavenward. “You’re killing me. I’ll be right back,” I added, turning around and leaving the room before I had a chance to reconsider my choice.
I knocked on Dom’s door and as soon as he opened the door, I punched him so hard I was sure I'd have my knuckles bruised.
He fell on the floor with a pained growl. I took the opportunity to walk in and close the door behind me.
“What the fuck, Luca!” he barked, sitting up on the floor, bringing his hand up and touching his busted left eyebrow. He looked at his fingers coated with blood. “That’s for lying to me, you fucking asshole, and for making her lie to me too.”
Dom stayed seated on the floor but reached for the towel on the bed and pressed it on his eyebrow.
“What? Nothing to say?” I asked tauntingly. “Did you think I was that stupid, amico? She is a terrible liar and you—” I snorted. “You were too happy to stay behind today. And I know how loyal she is—the only person she would lie for is you.”
“How did you find out?” He winced, pressing the towel a bit harder on his eyebrow.
I snorted. “Please give me more credit. I had you followed. What did you do at the hospital with my woman?”
“It’s complicated.”
“Uncomplicate it then!” I pointed an accusing finger at him. “You made her lie for you!”
“Oh, fuck right off, Gianluca. That girl is loyal to you to a fault. The only person she would lie for is not me…it’syou!”
“The only reason she’d lied to me is forme?” I nodded, pursing my lips. “You must think I’m a special kind of stupid.”
He sighed. “It all started the night of the ball. I didn’t, well, no, I did have an allergic reaction but I caused it on purpose.”
I arched my eyebrows in surprise; that was not something I had expected.
“Cassie caught me and wanted to run tell you the truth so I had to get her involved, and once I told her what I suspected, she wanted to help and didn’t take no for an answer.”
