I nodded. “Yes, I want you to meet my friends, see there’s a life outside of…” He waved his hand dismissively.
“That was my idea,” Dom piped in.
Luca glared at him, but I frowned. If Dom suggested it, he had to have a reason.
Luca leaned down and pecked my lips. “Why don’t you stay with your brother for a while? I need to work for a bit.” He looked toward Jude. “Your brother told me how much he loved burgers; Devlin will bring us back fast food for lunch.”
I nodded taking a seat across from Jude, knowing that while he was engrossed in his book he wouldn’t be interrupted, but I didn’t mind. I loved him just the way he was.
“So how was your evening? Amazing, I bet,” Dom teased, coming to sit beside me.
I looked up at him and he wiggled his eyebrows at me suggestively.
I rolled my eyes but remained silent.
“I’ve got to admit, I was a little annoyed to be sent out with the village idiot, but when I saw Luca coming down this morning whistling and with a spring in his step, I knew he was cured of his case of blue balls, making my night in the car almost worth it.”
I quickly glanced at my brother who was humming to himself; he was completely gone.
“New York? Why?”
It was Dom’s turn to look around. “I think we’re getting there. There’s one loose end that didn’t disappear. The first doctor, he’s in New York,” he whispered.
“Okay…”
“Luca will have to go see Matteo or Benny. He won’t take you there.”
“And I’m grateful for that.”
“The hospital is hiring. I need you to go for the interview, make your way over to his office as an overzealous attempt to get the job.”
“Okay, and how do you come in?”
“You’re causing a commotion, distracting them. I get the office all by myself while the perv’s trying to calm you.”
“What are you looking for? Dom, it’s been two years.”
He shrugged. “Account details—anything. Money leaves traces.”
“Fine, whatever helps.” I pointed at my brother. “He will be fine here, right? Despite everything.”
“You mean our lives?”
I nodded. “I don’t think he’s made for it.”
Dom looked at Jude. “You’d be surprised at how much a smart mind can do, and this one… He is scarily smart.”
“He is.”
“But no, Luca won’t let this life taint him unless he wants to. Lucaisa protector no matter what he thinks of himself. He will not let anything touch him or you… And the same applies to me.”
I gave him a warm smile. “I know, you’re like the big brother I never had.”
“Uh-huh… Does it mean I need to have the talk with Luca?” Dom rested his forefinger on his chin. “You know, treat her well or I'll shoot you in the kneecaps kind of talk.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’d like to see you try.”
Luca came back a little after that and every time his eyes locked on me, I felt a little shiver going down my spine.
