“Perfect, let’s go.”
“But did you find anything last night?” I asked as he turned the car around.
“A little, but not as much as I thought.” His voice was tight with frustration. “Luca seems to want to forget everything, but I found some of the scene photos and there are no brake marks on the road…” He shrugged. “I don’t know but don’t you think you would try to slow down if you lost control of your car? And there’s— I went to the city and sneaked into the hospital; there’s weird stuff in his file—page numbers are not how they should be…colors are different… Different handwriting for the same doctor…”
I frowned. “All little things but enough to make you question everything.”
Dom threw me a quick side-look full of relief. “Exactly! I’m so glad we’re on the same page.”
“We’ll figure it out. Have you tried to speak to the doctor or the policeman in charge?”
He sighed. “I did… The doctor died in a house fire a couple of months after the accident, and the cop was shot seven times in the chest in a house break-in a week after.”
“I see… Could be a coincidence,” I said, not even believing it myself. “But…it looked a lot like tying up loose ends to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why don’t you tell him? He’s going to be mad when he finds out.”
Dom shrugged. “He might but he’s been so down in the pit of despair… He won’t believe he is not to blame, at least not now.”
“Okay, we’ll figure out something.”
When we reached the house, Luca was waiting for us, his arms crossed on his chest as he glowered at the car.
Dom rolled his eyes. “Boy, dad’s fucking mad.”
“Why?”
Dom let out a low chuckle. “You are so clueless it’s endearing.”
As soon as the car stopped, Luca opened my door.
“Cassie.”
I frowned at the cold edge in his voice. “Luca,” I replied, getting out of the car.
Luca looked up at Dom. “I thought you both walked home. It took you…” He looked down at his watch. “Over an hour to come back.”
Dom shrugged. “We stopped in the woods for a quick fuck but this one took a long time to come.”
I looked at Dom, my mouth open with shock as I could hear a low growl coming from Luca.
Did men actually do that? I looked up at Luca… He looked ready to kill Dom. It made no sense though since he left me all hot and wanting in the bed last night.
Dom laughed. “Works every time. I’ll see you later.” He threw me a last look before going up the stairs, whistling.
“Cassie,'' Luca started, his voice much softer now, so soft it almost felt like a caress on my skin.
I nodded. “We need to talk, I know. Where to?”
Luca seemed taken aback by my acceptance, and to be honest, if it had not been for my chat with Dom, I would have gone into hiding to lick my wounds.
“The library?” he suggested, gesturing me up the stairs.
I nodded and followed him silently there.
“Cassie, about last night, I'm sorry,” he started as soon as he closed the door behind us.
