“I need you to go see Matteo and tell him he needs to come to City Hall this afternoon with another member of the council. I need them to witness.”
“Matteo? Really?” He grimaced. “I spent four hours with the guy after you left; it’s plenty for a lifetime.”
I sighed. “Dom, please.”
“Si.” He rubbed his stubble. “What do you think it all meant, yesterday? Why did Matteo help?”
I didn’t want Dom to worry, giving Matteo a blank promise as I did was stupid beyond belief, but it was born out of a desperation Dom couldn’t understand.
“Matteo wanted me back on top; helping me get Cassie was the only way. If she had died—” I couldn’t contain the shiver that went down my spine and the wave of nausea that hit my stomach at the mere thought.
Dom paled too, his hand tightening into a tight fist on the counter. I knew that the idea of losing Cassie was just as unfathomable to him as it was to me.
“If she had died, there would have been no me left.”
“And I would have killed them all,” Dom added darkly.
I nodded, throwing a look toward the bedroom where my woman was still sleeping. We would both die for her and the thought reassured me somehow.
“I’ll go deal with Genovese. Anything else?”
I shook my head. “No, Cassie doesn’t want a big fuss.”
Dom gave me a small smile. “I didn't expect anything less from her. She is all about simplicity.”
“I still can't believe she chose me,” I admitted.
Dom snorted. “I can't either, that woman is clinically insane.”
I threw him a withering look. “Cazzo.”
He chuckled, shaking his head. “You are not seeing yourself clearly; you never did. She seesyou, who you truly are, and yes, you’re not easy but you are a good man, the best of men. Did you really think I’d follow you in the depth of despair if I ever doubted you, Luca?” He gave me a small smile. “She made the right choice. I don’t think she could ever find anyone who would be just as dedicated as you.”
It was my turn to have a lump of emotion forming in my throat.
I cleared my throat. “You better go now; this wedding will not happen by itself. I have to call Carter now. I have a few favors to cash out.”
Dom glanced at the clock in the room. “It’s six thirty.”
I shrugged. “They have two infants; I’m pretty sure they’re up.”
Dom nodded. “Fine, I’ll get ready and go. I should be back in the next few hours with the rings.”
Dom turned toward the door, took a step, but stopped before turning around again.
“What do you think Benny meant when he sang?”
Ah, that, I did wonder the same thing but that also was a problem for another time. Did Benny know what I did? Who I killed in the name of brotherhood?
“It was the desperate words of a desperate man, trying to goad us to buy time.” I waved my hand dismissively. “I have enough things to deal with. That was irrelevant.”
Dom nodded. “Yeah, I think you’re right.” But I knew him well enough to know that he would not forget.
As soon as Dom was gone I called Carter and as predicted he was already wide awake, the sound of a wailing child in the background.
“Whatever it is, Luca, it will have to wait,” he said as a way of greeting.
“I’m getting married and I need your help.”
