“I’d think twice about it,” Savio warned, standing behind Cassie, raising the gun to the side of her head.
“Where’s your loyalty?” Benny spat at Matteo.
“What loyalty do I oweyou?” He frowned, clearly annoyed by Benny’s outburst.
Benny gave him a wicked smile. “Brother, brother, where are you? I’m standing right next to you,” he sang.
I didn’t have the time to realize what was happening until I noticed Matteo’s gun from the corner of my eyes and Benny fell heavily to the floor, a clean shot right in the middle of the forehead.
Then I heard the cock of a gun and felt the shot on my side and I felt like I’d just died.
Chapter Twenty-Four
CASSIE
Noise? Water? Pain? Everything at the same time. My mouth felt so dry it was like I had cotton balls in it.
I moaned softly, trying to move, but my arms were stuck and suddenly I heard a deafening bang quickly followed by a second one.
I jerked back on my chair, wincing at the pain in my head and my body.
“Cassie, mi amore, open your eyes.”
“Luca?” I tried to speak but my throat was so dry like I had swallowed sand.
“Cassie, please.”
I was not familiar with such desperation in his voice.
I tried my hardest to open my eyes but my vision was a little blurry. I could just see Luca’s shape kneeling in front of me as his hands touched my legs.
“I feel weird.” Why was I feeling weird? Why didn't I remember anything after the lawyer appointment?
“Luca?”
“Yes, tesora. I’m here, and I’m not letting you out of my sight again.”
I felt someone tug at my hands and turned my head, startled.
Dom threw me a quick smile before working on my hands, untying them.
I looked up and noticed Matteo standing behind Luca and everything came back like a wave. Savio, the needle.
“Savio kidnapped me!”
I could see Luca’s face more clearly now and the worry in his face, the deep frown between his eyebrows, the thin line of his lips.
“He did, sweetheart.”
Matteo came to stand beside Luca, looking all kingly in his dark suit. He eyed me critically and extended a bottle of water to Luca before saying something in Italian.
Luca replied quite harshly to him before turning toward me. “Drink, it will help with the drugs' side effects,” Luca said gently, still kneeling in front of me.
I nodded, trying to take the bottle but my hand was shaking too much.
Luca brought the water to my lips and I drank greedily, the cold water doing wonders to my achy throat. I had not even realized I had drunk the whole thing. until Luca discarded the bottle and spoke over my shoulder. “Can you get another one? Also, tell Enzo what happened.”
Matteo was still eyeing me, and the intensity of his eyes made me uncomfortable.
