“L-l-luca, it’s not m-m-me,” he said, looking around with wide eyes, his big glasses perched precariously on his thin nose.
Any other day I would have been patient with him, nice. Enzo was a good kid and he got enough shit from his own father and brother.
“Enzo, I know that but you need to choose a side now. Where are they?”
He looked around uncertain, throwing a worried look toward Matteo. He knew something, but he also felt guilty. He knew that no matter what it would not end well.
“Look at me!” I snapped.
Enzo turned to me, startled by my tone.
“Forget Matteo, he can’t help you now. I’m the worst nightmare in this room. Now choose and choose well. Either you side with your father and brother who always have a kick in humiliating you or you side with your capo.” I pointed at myself. “And his consigliere.” I pointed at Dom who looked at me with clear surprise.
Of course, he was my consigliere; there was no man in the world I trusted more than him.
“Wow…” Matteo rolled his eyes. “That’s another plot twist I never saw coming. You are so unpredictable. A true man of mystery.”
“I-I’m with y-you, L-l-luca. Always.”
I gave him a sharp nod. If he didn’t speak now, I swear to God I would take him down too.
“My f-f-father has a s-secret warehouse on t-t-the docks.”
“Address?” Dom demanded.
Enzo retrieved a little notebook from his inside pocket and extended it to Dom.
“F-f-first page.”
Dom opened the notebook and looked at me. “Seems legit.” He jerked his head toward Enzo. “You’re coming too.”
By the time we reached the warehouse, I felt like a predator in a cage, restless and starving, ready to spring and kill.
As soon as the car stopped, I rushed out of the car and charged toward the door, ready to go in all gun blazing.
I was just reaching the back door when someone grabbed my arm to stop me.
I snarled, swirling around to face Matteo.
“Stop, don’t let your emotions take over. Let’s take a minute.”
I looked down at his hand gripping my forearm. “Be careful, Genovese; people will think you care.”
He snorted. “Hardly, but I finally convinced you, a half-decent capo, to step up, and it’s not to have you killed or exiled now.”
“Priorities, right?” I asked mockingly.
“Always.” He looked at the door. “I’ll go in first, just give me a minute and follow…and don’t forget your promise.”
I looked back at Dom who shrugged and Enzo who was cowering on the wall.
“You stay here, Enzo, okay?” I tried to make my voice sound softer than before.
He nodded, a grateful look on his face.
“Okay, let’s go.”
Matteo retrieved his Beretta from his right side holder and attached the silencer he had in his pocket.
