“Bring Enzo back to the hotel. We’ll meet you there.”

“We?” Matteo asked when Dom was gone. “You know I can’t mettle, Gianluca; this is something happening in your own family.”

I shook my head. “But what if I take him down? Will I be judged?”

“You will.”

“But he has her! I love her. “

“Well… That’s a plot twist… She is not your wife, Gianluca; you have not officially claimed her as yours. For the famiglia, she is nothing more than an unbound civilian who knows way too much about us. Benny will not be judged too harshly for his hastiness.”

“She is not nothing; for me she is everything. Do you even know what love is?”

He tipped his mouth in disgust. “God, no! I thank God every day for protecting me from such a curse.”

“Maybe you should thank your lack of heart.”

Matteo pondered that. “Yes, that too.”

I was not above begging him, not for her. “Help me and I’ll step up, take my seat again and be a good little capo.”

Matteo looked at me with his sadistic smile. “I’m afraid it won't be enough this time.”

I understood the underlying message. He wanted to bargain. “What do you want?”

“I want a favor.”

I nodded, every minute lost was a risk on her life. “I’ll give you anything. Help me save her.”

“Anything?” The glimmer in his eyes unsettled me. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

“As long as it’s not Cassie or our future children—anything.”

Matteo made a disgusted sound. “Children? Lord, no! Who would willfully want those parasites? God, keep your offspring.” He fake shuddered at the thought. “No, I’ll ask you for something one day and you’ll have to say yes, no matter what it is and you’re stepping up now. You are the capo again from this moment.”

“Fine, yes, whatever.”

“Giuro.”

“Lo giuro sulla mia vita, sul mio nome, e sul mio sangue.”

He stood up with a nod. “Let’s go.”

When we made it to the hotel, Sergio was in my room, his face swollen and bleeding.

“How?” I barked at him, not caring he was half dead.

“I didn’t expect Savio to—” He croaked before leaning against the wall, holding his head. “I think I have a concussion.”

“You’d be lucky if it’s all you have.” I scanned the room and stopped at the bar by the kitchenette. “You and I will talk when I get her back.”

I turned to Matteo, showing him the necklace I’d bought Cassie and the note that simply said, ‘Step down and get her back.’

“I’m going to kill him,” I announced.

Matteo shook his head. “No, you won’t; don’t make him a martyr. Don’t start a war within the famiglia. He’ll get dealt with.”

At this moment Dom arrived with Enzo.
