His eyes darkened and he leaned in. “Get in the truck.”
She grinned and started toward the parking lot. Then realized she didn’t know which one was his. “Uh…”
Levi stopped by her rental. She handed him the keys. “How did you know?”
“Only out-of-town license plate,” he said with a grin. He grabbed her bag out of the backseat and relocked the Jeep. Then he turned toward the big pickup she’d parked about two centimeters away from. He hit the fob on his keychain and she heard the truck unlock.
“This is yours?”
He gave her a wink. “Bigger than you expected, right?”
She laughed. “You keep surprising me in that area.”
“Brat.” He swatted her butt. “Get in.”
Kate climbedup into the truck in front of him and he appreciated the height of the truck’s seat for a whole other reason.
She truly looked good from every angle.
He’d bought the truck because he’d gotten tired of the deep gravel and snow on his way to his new house scraping the bottom of his Jag.
His beautiful, sleek, expensive sports car was now parked in a garage that was older than he was. His insurance agent had assured him that if the roof of the garage fell in on the car, he was covered. He’d still cry, but at least he’d get his money back. He was now driving a pickup.
A huge pickup.
But he was getting used to it. It definitely had some advantages.
For one, he barreled through gravel and snow. And last week he’d hauled a bunch of logs in it. And he’d helped pull another car out of a ditch last weekend. He hadn’t had the chain—and hadn’t known how to hook the chain up to the truck or the car—but with TJ Bennett’s help, he’d done it. And next time he wouldn’t need help. Probably.
Levi followed her into the truck, settling behind the wheel.
He couldn’t wait to get her home. He always felt that way. The moment he saw her, he wanted her. Always. Every time.
But after seeing Tucker’s hands on her and his obvious interest, Levi was feeling even more possessive than usual.
Possessive was such an unusual thing for him to feel about—well, anything or anyone. He’d never felt possessive or jealous, as a matter of fact.
Until Katherine Elizabeth Leggot showed up in his life. Now he knew all about possessive and jealous. He just wasn’t sure what to do about it.
What he wanted to do was, frankly, fuck her until she couldn’t move, couldn’t think of anything but him, until every single moment of her life was all about him. But a part of him—because he was actually a smart, reasonable, in-touch-with-reality guy—knew he couldn’t do that.
He glanced over at her. “I can’t believe you came,” he said. He’d been stunned to see her in the Come Again, stunned that she’d changed her plans. Stunned and touched. And hopeful.
Very hopeful. This was good. She was here and she’d come on her own.
He’d gone to San Francisco to be with her on New Year’s Eve and it had been fantastic…right up until he’d mentioned that they would spend many more New Year’s Eves together. He truly believed that Kate was falling for him, maybe had already fallen. But he felt her pulling back at times when he talked about the future or referred to things in the very long term.
He knew she didn’t trust it. She felt it, he knew that. When they were connected physically—whether it was kissing, holding hands or making love—he knew she felt every bit of the love and the sense of forever that he felt. But the words made her doubt.
Still, he couldn’t quite make himself keep his mouth shut.
Which meant he needed to combine his words with a lot of the physical stuff too. It worked. They wanted each other with a hunger that was startling in its intensity. He’d never felt anything like it before. When he was deep inside of her, loving her, it was truly like fireworks. He’d never felt anything like that before either. And he’d never get enough.
So it wasn’t really aproblemthat he and Kate needed to be physically connected for her to truly believe everything they were feeling.
“I couldn’t stay away,” she told him with a small smile. “I’m finding that being with you is more tempting than anything else.”
No, the physical stuff wasn’t a problem at all. If he had to touch her constantly the entire time she was in Sapphire Falls to ensure she felt and trusted his love, then by God, he’d touch her constantly.
