I was starting to feel suffocated in this house and needed to get out and do things. I was used to keeping busy. It was impossible to come and go as I pleased without a vehicle here in California. Phillip couldn’t be at my beck and call whenever I needed to go somewhere, so I had to find a solution to my problem. I grabbed my phone from the counter and dialed Adam.
“Hello, Emerson. How are things going?”
“I’m suffocating here, and I need to borrow your car while you’re gone.”
There was silence on the other end.
“Hello. Did you hear me? Can I please borrow your car?”
Again, a moment of silence and then a sigh. “I guess. But you better be careful with it.”
“Thank you, Adam, and I promise I will be. Is it at your house?”
“Yep. It’s in the garage. The keys are in the drawer to the left of the stove. The contractors are there working, so you should be able to get in. I can’t stress enough about my car, Em. You better take good care of it.”
“I will.”
“How’s it going with Alex?”
“He’s a pompous, uptight pain in the ass.”
He snickered. “Sounds like Alex. Are you behaving yourself?”
“Of course. I’m on my best behavior in front of His Majesty.”
“God, Em. That right there tells me things aren’t going so well.”
“You worry too much. Go back to work, and thanks for the car. I love you!”
I sent a text message to Phillip.
“Can you drive me to my brother’s house, please?”
“When do you need to go?”
“As soon as possible.”
“I’ll be there in about fifteen minutes.”
“Thank you, Phillip.”
Chapter Nine
Alex
In and out of meetings all day, dealing with ignorant people, a mess of problems, and thinking about Emerson left me exhausted. I wasn’t feeling well, so I decided to call it a night and go home. I noticed Adam’s car in the driveway as Phillip pulled up to the house.
“Phillip, do you know why Adam’s car is here?”
“I drove Emerson to his house today to pick it up. She told me she’ll be driving herself around from now on.”
“I see.” I climbed out of the Bentley and told him to have a good night.
I went upstairs to my bedroom, changed into my swimsuit, and decided to go for a swim. Besides sex, a good swim always relieved some tension. As I stepped out onto the patio, I saw Emerson in the pool. I sighed because I wasn’t in any mood to deal with her tonight.
“Hey. You’re home early tonight.”
“Yeah. I need to go for a swim before I do some work from home.”
