She gave a reluctant chuckle.
“You’re an asshole, you know that, Raker?”
“I know that,” I said. “Hang on.”
My promise to Sunni drove me like a goddamn monster down the highway.
“Why are you doing this?” she groaned. “You don’t give a shit about me.”
“What is important to Sunni is important to me,” I said. “Besides, she has her heart set on you two being godparents to the baby. And I’ll be damned if I don’t give Sunni what she wants.”
But the blood was dried on my cut before I got any good news.
“She’s going to make it,” the doctor told me. “We just need to keep her in for a few days.”
I sighed with relief.
Thank god.
Thank goddess, I guess. Fuck.
I picked up my phone, scrolling through the messages from Teacher.
Then I got a notification.
Intruder detected
And it was at the Clubhouse.
Shit
CHAPTER 27
Sunni
Raker had told me to try to rest, that there would be no news for hours. But I couldn’t fall asleep, no matter what I did, so eventually I got up and went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of peppermint tea.
Was it possible Raker was telling the truth?
That he could be trusted again? To do what he promised?
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry as I looked at my pretty desert rose ring.
My husband had curtly informed me that changes were being made to the Saints club girl program.
The apartment building next door had been bought and would now be repurposed as housing so each club girl could have her own room. Members could go and socialize with whoever they wanted. Employment was now based on a vote of the members and passing the test by fucking the Club President had been canceled.
I only put on a little light so it wouldn’t wake anyone else up, but Elise padded in, wrapping her robe tighter around her slim body.
“I can’t sleep either.”
I smiled and turned the stove on, watching the pretty little kettle until it began to bubble.
“They’ll be OK,” I said.
“The Elders are powerful, though,” Elise said, shivering. “What if something happens to them? What if something happens to Willow?”
“Raker is powerful too,” I replied firmly. “And so is Willow. She knows exactly where those underground streams are. It will be all over soon and we’ll have all the water we want.”
