"I'm not, I'm not--" Maverick began, then stopped.
Amanda looked furiously at him.
"It's because he's with me," she said defiantly, putting her arm under his.
Oh god, she was even more of an idiot than I suspected.
I said nothing, becauseIwasn't an idiot, just stood there innocently and folded my hands neatly together. Austin also stayed respectfully silent, just as I had instructed him, and you would barely believe, looking at his neat polo shirt and khakis, that he had fingered me in the truck on the way over.
Maverick had one singular brain cell bouncing around in there, so he had already started to shake his head but it was too late.
"You two are havingan affair?" Mr. Perez asked, in a voice that could have cut glass.
And Amanda finally started to backpedal, but it was waywaytoo late. Mr. Perez could tell by looking at the both of them that they were guilty as sin.
I didn't say shit, merely adjusted my neat little skirt and looked demure.
"I'm very displeased to hear that I've been unknowingly enabling your affair," Mr. Perez said. "I've been considering making the both of you officially partners, giving you the topcases to work on. Butthatwas before I knew about your deeply unethical behavior."
"It wasn't unethical!" Amanda cried, looking panicky now. "There was a good reason for it!"
"And what was that?" Mr. Perez asked coldly.
Maverick looked miserable.
"No, you're right," he said, and his Adam's apple bobbed up and down. "It was wrong to cheat on my wife."
I had never seen my big arrogant husband look like that, his head hung down in shame.
Amanda raised her club like she was going to brain him.
"Tell them!" she cried. "Tell them why you want to divorce her! Because she's such a ridiculous fucking stereotype and all she does all day is, like, bake cookies and have babies! She's just a bimbo and he deserves more!"
Mr. Perez' bushy eyebrows rose so high they practically disappeared into his thick white hair. "I know Tallulah very well, and she is extraordinarily intelligent," he said coldly. "I think you've been played, Amanda. I’m afraid this foolishness makes me have second thoughts about both of your futures with my firm.”
She looked over at me, and I smiled sweetly at her.
Dumb bitch.
"Is that true, Maverick?" Mr. Perez continued, turning to my ex. "I always thought you knew how lucky you were. Are you going to sit there and tell me you cheated on your wifebecause she bakes cookies?"
"No," Maverick said, his voice low. "I can't explain it. There's nothing I can say that would explain it."
"This has all been very distressing," I put in, dabbing a white cambric handkerchief to my eye. "I'm afraid I'll have to leave you, Mr. Perez. But I've already left a homemade Danish coffee cake at the front desk for you."
"Thank you, Tallulah," he said, smiling warmly at me. "Marigold and I would love to have you and the kids over for dinner soon. You can even bring your new gentleman friend."
Maverick’s handsome face was white with fury, and he looked like he wanted nothing more than to put his big hands around Austin’s neck and squeeze. Meanwhile, the naked envy on Amanda's face went down like fine wine, and I gave Mr. Perez a quick hug.
"I'd love nothing better," I said. "Marigold is an amazing cook, and I still dream about her chocolate babkas."
Mr. Perez grinned. "I'll tell her you said that. That's a huge compliment coming from you, Tallulah."
I was so pleased with how it had gone that as soon as we left the country club I made Austin pull over on the side of the road, and enthusiastically sucked his cock as a reward for how respectably he had behaved.
And wouldn't you know it, who would drive by a few minutes later but Amanda and Maverick. She had her head in her hands and looked to be sobbing loudly, while my ex-husband was in the driver's seat so he had a great angle to meet my eyes as my mouth was wrapped around another man’s dick.
He was very quiet when he came home later, didn't say anything at first.
