“I’m not using your doctor, Finn.”

“Don't worry about the cost. I’ll handle it.”

I go on talking about how friendly the nurses are and how they’re so good at blood draws I barely feel the needle pinch. “There. It’s all set.”

I look up from my phone when she doesn’t answer. Her lips are pressed together in a firm line, her arms crossed against her chest, and she’s staring at the field. I follow her gaze and ask, “What happened?”

“You happened!”

“You’re mad at me?” I ask, thoroughly confused about the change in her mood. “What did I do?”

“I said we could have a conversation about doing away with protection, and I told you I don’t want to see your doctor, but you took it upon yourself to book an appointment, anyway.”

“He’s a good doctor. I've used him for years.”

She throws her hands up. Getting to her feet, she says, “He’s probably a league doctor and I’ve been poked and prodded by enough of those.”

The blood drains from my face as I get to my feet too. “I’m an idiot. I’m sorry, Thea. I wasn’t thinking about that. I just-”

“You’re just so desperate to win this stupid rivalry you have with Wolfe that you’d disregard my thoughts.”

“This has nothing to do with Deacon.”

“Well, it doesn’t have anything to do with me either, since you’re charging right ahead, without even asking me if I’m ready for us to move to that next step.”

“You’re right. I didn’t ask.” She looks at me as if expecting me to say something else. “Oh no, Pet. I’m not sorry for wanting to slide inside you bare and pump you full of my cum. I will still be making my doctor's appointment and getting blood work done so that I can give you the results.”

I step closer. “And the day you give me your results will be the day we stop using condoms.” I wrap my arms around her, pulling her close. “And then the real competition begins.”

“What competition?”

“To see which one of us puts a baby in you first.”

She snorts. “That’s not happening. I’m nowhere ready for kids.”

“Me either. But when you are, I’m gonna be daddy number one.” I see her gearing up to counter that statement. “Thea, you’re stuck with me. We’re gonna be together until we’re old and gray. I told you last year that I wanted a marriage contract with you. I get it’s not as romantic of a gesture as giving a ring, but you never struck me as a ring girl. So I gave you knives, throwing stars, and hostages, and I’m committed to helping you usurp the fourth bloodline. But if you need a big flashy ring, I can get you one of those, too.”

I grab her ass, eliminating the last bit of distance between us. Letting her feel what thoughts of forever with her does to me. Grinding against her, I ask, “Do I need to get down on one knee with a ring?”

“You on your knees sounds fun, but no. I don’t need a ring.”

“Just the words on my tongue, then?”

“A few fingers wouldn’t hurt.”

I glance over my shoulder to see if anyone’s looking our way.

She laughs, pushing out of my hold. “I didn’t mean here, Number Three.”

“I’m not sure I can wait until we get home.” Looking around again, I ask, “Do you trust me?”

“Not when you ask me with that look on your face.”

“Smart girl. This look means I shouldn’t be trusted to do the right thing and wait until we get home.”

Grabbing her hand, I drag her down the bleachers and over to the entrance to the field and into the tunnels. As we get closer, she tries to yank her hand out of my grip to get away. I stop just inside the opening. Far enough that we can’t be seen from the path, but not as deep as she was that night. Pulling out her knife from the small of her back, I place it in her hand. “You remember that game we played to see who could make who cum fastest?”

In a strained voice, she answers, “Yes.”
