“Fine.”

“You gave Mr. Cox quite a scare. Do you remember what happened?”

“Someone locked me in the sauna..”

He gives me a pitying smile. “No one did anything to you, Miss LaReaux. You stayed in the sauna too long and passed out. There’s a reason we don’t recommend exceeding twenty minutes. You run the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and, in your case, heat stroke. It’s a good thing Mr. Cox found you.”

“I- I couldn’t get out. The door was locked.”

“I’m sure the fatigue you felt made it seem that way. We’ve given you some fluids and cold compresses. We recommend you continue to hydrate throughout the night with water and electrolytes. Probably just broth for food to make sure you can keep it down.”

My head still feels foggy, and the details of what happened are fuzzy. Was I so overcome by the heat that I lacked the strength to open the door? “Mr. Cox has volunteered to see you safely back to the dorm. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

I swing my legs over the side of the bed and get my first look at what I’m wearing. “Um, Pax.” I look around the room. “Where are my clothes?”

He snarls, “How the hell should I know?”

“You didn’t grab my gym bag before your brought me here?”

“I found you delirious on the floor. Sure, I thought, let me go looking through the girl’s locker room so I can find your shit.”

My legs are bare and I’m swimming in a zip up hoodie. “Whose nasty ass clothes am I wearing?”

“Mine. I carry a sweatshirt with me, so I yanked it on you. Good thing too, because the towel came off on our way here.”

My head snaps up. “You carried me all the way here from the gym?”

“No, I teleported. Now if you’re done asking stupid ass questions. Let’s go.”

“The doctor’s gone. You can stop acting like you’re some kind of hero, when you’re probably the person who locked me in to begin with.”

I struggle to hang on to my attitude. The truth is, my nerves are shot. I feel like I did when I first came back to school, and I don’t want to be anywhere near Paxton Cox, or anyone else on campus right now.

“Go on. You’re dismissed.”

He stalks over and gets into my face, leaning close enough that I get an extra whiff of his body wash. “Look here, you little brat. I’m about sick and tired of you getting yourself into trouble and having to come put out the fires. I don’t want to spend a second more with you than necessary, but the only way the doctor would release you was if someone escorted you back to the dorms. And since your friends are off campus, I got stuck doing it. Or would you like Mr. Laurent to come sign you out?”

“What?”

“That’s right. As a legacy heir, school policy says the infirmary has to release you to the head of your bloodline.”

“Then why did the doctor agree to leave me with you?”

“Four months and you still don’t know the answer? The Trium is at the top of the food chain here. We’re the exception to the rules. Now either get off your ass, or stay here for the rest of the night.”

Ipace back and forth. I can’t calm myself enough to sit still. Not after the phone call we got from Pax. Somebody did it again. Some dead man locked Thea in a sauna and left her there. But once again, we’re saying it was anaccidentto keep everyone else from overreacting and causing a panic. Not that they should be panicking. So far, these near-death experiences have only happened to Thea.

“She’s okay, right?”

Holden nods, still staring at his tablet screen. “Her medical records are clear from any lasting issues. She’s on fluids and bedrest for the next twenty-four hours, and could probably benefit from a massage to offset the muscle cramps, but other than that, she’s fine.”

“You didn’t see anything on the cameras?”

“A bunch of people entering and exiting the gym, but there aren’t any cameras over by the sauna.”
